Default Oil Pressure

2001 2500
OK, I did a search and looked at some of the past posts. My checkgauges light comes on shortly after my oil pressure gauge either never comes up or it has been up and drops to zero. The engine temp is OK and there are no bad noises. If the switch is bad, then my question is where is it? I haven't looked real hard for it, but I figured it might be easier to just ask. Also, who sells them besides the dealership.

thanks guys
Mike J.

Sounds to me like the sending unit. Try this thread. I had to yahoo search it to find it cause this search never seems to work for me.

the oil sending unit is only a pressure switch. if it sees 5psi of oil pressure it tell the computer there is oil pressure. the needle you see is only a computerized model that is driven by engine RPM's.

chad is right, your sending unit is bad.

Thanks for the help guys. It is located on the block below the ECM and above the motor mount behind the fuel filter housing. Pretty hard to get to. The switch was bad. Wow, cost $190.00. Must be a damn good switch! The new one (Cummins part) was a 1-1/16" deep socket. The old one was a 1-1/4" deep socket. Once I finally got the right socket for the old one, the total time to replace it was about 5 minutes!

WTF?!? Your saying the oil pressure is faked on the guage? All it is really telling me is that there is at least 5 lbs of pressure?

You suck ...

I had no problem getting the old one out, but i had a HELUVA hard time getting the new one in. I tried from above, and below. I finally was able to get it started from below, but then tightened it up from above.

BTW - For those wondering, here it is ...

Probably just luck! Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
