you can’t always go by miles on the factory oil you also have to look and see how old the oil it is.
EXCELLENT point DB, and one that I totally overlooked

Well done !!

If you want to go to longer oil change intervals then you need to get an oil by pass system installed and use high quality synthetic oil like Redline, Royal Purple or Amsoil like I use and take oil samples to be tested.
When can I start using synthetic oil? Also, how much more does it cost?

Actually, I'd love to have use the first image I found when searching for "flipping the bird" on the image search in google, but that might have got me banned, so I ended up using the second image.

Switching to synthetic depends on how you use your truck. You want the engine broke-in before switching. That could be anywhere between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. Shorter if you tow alot, longer if you don't work it that hard.

FYI- The dealer I bought mine from suggested 6000 mile oil change intervals because they disagreed with the service schedules as well. I usually try to target 5000-6000 miles with dino oil myself.

Best $25 you'll ever spend if you change your own oil.
Absolutely !!

That is a cool adapter, but Gino's has also the "EZ Change Drain Plug", which is another design that incorates a primary fitting the stays on the drain pan, another secondary fitting with hose attached that screws onto the primary drain fitting. When the two are mated together, the fitting releases the oil down thru the hose.
After draining is complete, the secondary is removed and stored, and a convienent cap is screwed onto the primary fitting. All in all, the primary fitting along with the cap has a very low profile, and any thought of accidental draining or shearing off are minimized.

I have this on my ride and no probelms to speak of.
(I'm assuming I have Mayfair's endorsement on this?)

I switched to synthetic oil at 10,300 but then I had worked my engine hard enough to seat the rings. If you have worked it then any time after 10,000 miles it should be safe. But if you have not worked the engine then you may want to wait until 15,000 or more miles or you can load it up and work it hard for 2-3K to make sure the rings are seated and then go to synthetic oil.
