Default spare key

so i had a spare key cut at wally world the other day. got home and tried it and everytime i start the vehicle with it the vehicle dies after a second or two. it won't restart unless i take the key out and put it back in. then once i start it after a second or two it dies. obviously some kind of safety feature with the truck. anyone know of a way to over ride this. i don't feel like spending dealership prices for a spare key. any info is appreciated.

anti theft computer chip in your factory key. Thats why they are so expensive at the dealers. I usually carry a store cut key much smaller, in my pocket just so I can open the door if I lock the keys in the ignition. Saved me many times.

hate to say it but it is hard to get around that only thing i have seen is a person taking a programmed key and securing it under the column cover next to the SKIM (security key imobilizer module) chrysler terms and then that will send a constant security reading to the module and you can use your cheap key to get it but you waste one key that was being used for the vehicle may just have to pay the price and get another programmed from the dealer. they usually only are about 30-40 dollars just for the skim key without the remote built into it but you cannot get the remote seperate from that then let me knwo if it helped

Seems like Chrysler invented a new way to get you to go to the dealer and get raped. Think about it. What kind of thief is going to take the time to cut a key to steal your truck??? What good can this do other than 1 more thing that can break (take it to the dealer to get fixed) or need a new key? Bend over and we'll make you one.

well i guess bob it is a way to keep others from stealing your truck or vehicle. cant even break the cylinder and drive away you need a valid key to make your truck start making it even more unlikely that someone will be able to steal it or even think of stealing it. and i can tell you bob that it is more than just chrysler making they keys with the skim option in them ford chevy gmc even those crappy foreign POS things have them if the chrysler way is so bad then dont drive them hate how people knock the brand they drive just have to understand why they do it it wasnt to get you to buy just a 40 dollar key they change things like that for the better of the vehicle would like to think .

I love my truck, just hate dealers. All of them are crooks to some point. I see all the time where some one posts a message about being charge $300 for 10 minutes worth of labor, or getting denied warranty work for some lousy excuse. How about the stealership nickname I see in every other post? Even the guy that started this thread said:

i don't feel like spending dealership prices for a spare key. any info is appreciated.
How many post do you see where some one had a good experience at a dealer? ZERO! I'm sure you will see plenty now in this thread from this point forward now that I have brought it up. But until now, how many post do you see???

If it is possible to put a screwdriver in the ignition and twist a few wires, I'm sure that if some punk car thief hasn't figure out how to do it, it is only a matter of time. I still think it is an intentional rip by the car manufacturers to stick you for some extra $$$$ some where down the line.

There is another way around it, without costing a key, just a remote start and the bypass module for it (the security) The major companies (Like DEI, they make viper, avital, and a whole slew of others) make a module that has the little transponder in it that you have to program with BOTH of your original keys, then the remote start will work, but you're looking at closer to $200 just in parts for that, plus labor unless you're comfortable doing it yourself. I've installed dozens in Chryslers, (the first one I saw with the transponder key was BMW) but I've never tried a standard key after installing the remote start, although I don't think it would work without first activating the aftermarket security bypass module, it could easily be done however.

Can't your get one off e-bay and if you have two keys you can program it yourself.

That's why you need to keep3 keys going at all times,or 4 would be better.

I don't have it on my 05 and I got mine from the lot with a cheap key in it, unless they by-passed it.

i appreciate the posts. sounds like i have a key that will unlock the door and get me into the truck and that is about it. guess i will have to check with the dealer about a spare. I have to say $30 to $40 is quite a bit more than the $1 i paid at wally world. guess that price will have to beok since it has some anti theft built in that will keep some turd from stealing my rig with a plain ol' shaved key. anyway again i thank everyone who gave a post.

You can program the key your self if you have two functioning keys, I programmed my new key and have had no problems. I found it straight forward. The instructions are covered in your owners manual.
