Default New to diesels, want to know your opinions

hey guys, first off, idont currently have a ram, im looking. ive found a lot up here that has a 2006 2500 slt with the 5.9 and a 4 speed. it has 45k miles on it, 4wd Big Horn edition. what is a reasonable offer that you guys would say for it. they have it for 32,800 but i figure with my trade and my negotiation skills i can get them down to around 25-26000

or i found an 2008 3500 with the 6.7 and the 6 speed auto, theyre pretty much the same trim levels, the 08 has buckets where the 06 is a bench. the 08 they have for 38,000

so heres my question. which one do i go for? im not looking, at this time to doing any major modifications, so dont say buy the 06 and put 13k in mods, im a college student who works 2 full time jobs... its not like ive got an extra 13k just laying around.

Personally, I would go for the 06' and save 10k on what is really a better truck! I'm sure the 08' is nice but I am hanging on to my 5.9L till it rust off the motor mounts!!

With the new motor it is almost like comparing two totally different brands of trucks.

The 6.7 has a whole **** load of power stock and ready to rock. But then again it also has the DPF and all the EGR stuff. A lot of people don't have issues with it anymore. It was the early ones that seemed to have so many problems.

But the 5.9 is tried and true. Tested and able to be played with. Every single one of us said we wouldn't do anything to the trucks until xxxx. But then we start doing this and that and the next thing you know you're looking for a dyno just so you can see

Get the one that fits your needs for the long term. These trucks will run forever. So pick the one you're gonna be the happiest with.

so i went looking again today, i had an extra hour between class and school today, and found another 06. this one has only 29000 miles, the sport package, and some extras, stepbars, rims, soft cover. Plus it has some upgrades already done, k&n intake kit, exhaust (didnt get a chance to find out the maker but its a 4 inch pipe) and a holsten turbo. They only want 31600 for this one. let me know if you think that this is a good buy.

That sure is purty!!!

You wont hear me say anything bad about the 06's (hmm wonder why ) Depending on where you're at the price doesn't seem to bad. That is about what they are running here.

Nice looking truck!

However, having been a financially strapped college student long ago, let me just to throw some reality on you. Diesel is $3.70 a gallon and going up. These trucks get mid-teens MPG typically (especially if raised). EVERYTHING is more expensive to maintain; tires, batteries, oil, drivetrain, etc. It even costs more to register since they are heavier.

I know this is blasphemous, but If you don't want to get a third job, maybe you might want to think about a used Honda... [:-]
