cummins idle s itself up
i have a 05 cummins 6 speed manual, and have a question, whether its is first started up or in the morning, or it is completely warm, if you let it idle by itself with the parking brake on after awhile it will idle itself up to 1000 rpms, as soon as u do anyuthing like hit the break it idles back down, i understand why it would do this when its cold but why when the engine is at desired operating temperature, any info would be great thanks
ok thanks for the info, i aint trying to argue or anything, iam new to cummins, just want to take care of it and make it last as long as possible, but i go and on long trips and often sleep in my truck and let it idle through the night, so your saying this is not good for the motor? i just always thought diesels were met to run. thanks

Also, prolonged idling does more damage then good, cylinders run colder allow rings to pass and also fowls up injectors (carbon build-up... need heat to keep em clean)

and by the way 05cummins..... my truck does the same thing too!
yea idleing for these trucks isn't good. they arn't like the big rigs u let idle all night long. these bad boys will do what is called wet stacking. basically diesel fuel needs heat to burn fully and when u are just idleing temps can drop and allow fuel to be left in the cylinders and basically run down past the rings and allow the fuel to wash all the oil off the cylinder walls. this can cause premature wear on an engine.
In the owner's manual it states that the truck idles up to circulate the coolant. Since there is so much of it, guess it's a good idea.

It puts a little more load on the engine idling up like that. Also lubricates better at faster idle. If you're idling all night like that you should definitly look into doing the high idle mod. All you do is buy a little wire from cummins that costs anywhere from $12 to $20 plug it into the #22 pin on the ECM then ground it. Then take it to the dealer and have them enable high idle. After that when you bump it into fast idle it goes up to 1100 rpms and you can adjust it anywhere between that and 1500 rpms.
Several of us on here have done this mod and it's awesome. I bump mine up to 1100 every time after startups. When it's really cold I bump it up to 1500 for faster warmups. In the summer I'll go to 1500 so the cab will cool down faster. But idling these engines for extended periods is not good for them. Yeah big trucks do it and I do it in mine all the time. But it breaks down the oil, wastes fuel, and wears out the engine. Totally unnecessary idling these Rams for extended periods unless you sleep in it or you live in sub-arctic areas where the weather demands it.

where can i buy this part, how much should the dealer charge to do this, what isa safe idle rpm for all night in these cumminws? also is there a flash out there that can enable the power in the cabin util a door is opened thanks for the info
like the guys said this is normal but if you pay close attention the truck is also switching and running in 3 cylinder mode alternating the cylinders to create heat faster. and i am sorry to say if you do not have you electrical option i do not belive you can turn it on i could be wrong but have never heard of it added or turned on
