Default consumer reports mpg test

ok..i know everyone and their brother has asked about mpg's before, but the latest consumer reports mag (which i'm not the biggest fan of) has the 6.7 getting 13 avg....also shows the ford 6.4 getting 10 avg. are they way off or is this somewhat close. they also show the hemi gettin 13...which, depending on the amount of city driving, could be close. a co-worker has a newer duramax and he's gettin 17-19 mix...consumer reports has 13 as well for it. but, with the cummins/powerstroke having the regen/emmisions/exhaust crap i've heard mileage wasn't as good as before.

I have been tracking my fuel consumption very closely using an Excel spreadsheet. Since Day 1 my overall MPG is exactly 15.3, although lately it's closer to 15.7 MPG. Here is a link to the Excel file if you guys want to look at it. Feel free to plagiarize if you want to use it.

13/14 sounds about right for a 6.7 but I'm sure we'll hear from somebody with one that gets 19-21 People like to inflate their mpg numbers on forums for whatever reason.Every once in a while you'll see the truth - see above -but not often.

Well I guess I am one that likes to inflate. Know my truck is a 2wd not 4wd, I get 19.15 mpg running 74 mph on the hwy all day long, I do not drive in town much, Pulling a 11K 5th wheel I get 13.2 MPG @ 65 MPH, Yes the is hand calculated etc. I got 17.3 prior to the programmer.

Okay, Mayfair, I'll talk you through my spreadsheet. If you're able to view the file, then you must have Excel. It might also work with Open Office, but I've never tried it.

I created a new file for you here. It's slightly different than the other one, designed for those who are not Excel wizards. Download it and open it in Excel.

The cells with blue text are for you to enter your data. The cells in black are formulas, which means they take your data and do something with it. For example, the 'Miles' column takes your current odometer number and subtracts the previous odometer number from it. Row 3 is different, because there are no previous numbers for the calculations. Rows 4 and below will calculate total cost, miles, MPG, etc.

I put "protection" on the cells with formulas (black text) so you would not accidentally delete them. There is no password for the protection, which can be disabled with Tools ... Protection ... Unprotect Sheet. Go ahead and delete the blue cells that have my data, then enter your own and save it.

Let me know if you have questions.

When I click that link that you gave me, a window pops up that gives me 3 options

Open - Save - Cancel

I've always hit the open button and it opens it up, however I can't type anything in it. I'm basically jujst viewing it. Do I want to hit Save in order to be able to use it?

Told ya I was computer illeterate

Yeah, either right click over the link and select Save Target As... or left click, select Save. Choose where you want to save, such as My Documents. After you save it, open it by double clicking.
