Default Started then CLUNK!

Well, after waiting 4 months, and an argument with the dealership yesterday, I'm taking my truck in to the dealer tomorrow. As luck would have it I went to move my truck and as soon as it fired it made a loud CLUNK and the motor stopped and the CEL light came on. I restarted the motor and it seems to run fine. Any ideas? At least I already have an appointment tomorrow.

I took the truck for a little spin and noticed a few things. First of all it took a few crank cycles to start and between crank cycles I heard a rattling (almost like an ABS kicking on) from behind the gauges. Secondly when the key is released I can hear a grinding like the starter and flywheel are no longer aligned. However it runs like before. One other odd thing, my lie-o-meter was reading about 17.7 (I check it constantly) and now it reads 15.0. Strange.

I ran down to Autozone and borrowed the code reader, the truck has code P2509. Interruption of power to the engine computer. I can't find P2509 on any OBD2 lists, is it something specific to Dodge/Cummins?

I could see a power interruption when the motor stopped. It wasn’t like turning the key off and the engine stops turning, it was a loud clunk, a shake (waaay more than normal) and the motor stopped right away. So the shake could cause a connector to lose connection momentary. The code doesn’t really worry me. The loud clunk and the noisy starter/flywheel and the rattling (sounds from behind the gauge cluster and under the far left dash speaker) has me very concerned. A better description is like a power drill when the slipper clutch starts to slip, almost like a buzz every time the motor is cranked, whether it starts or not.

I got this from another site

p2509 = Powerdown data lost error

it can come from a loss of voltage detected at the ecm, for an extended period of time...

i would check all the fuses, relays, and batt. terminals first...

in the sending unit to the ecm, there should be 2 units (1) constant power (2)switch/keyed power...

without the correct power to the switch/keyed the truck will run like its starving for fuel, or wont run at all... [/align]

hey jim have never had one of these trucks truely die from this code but have seen this code often in the dealership. dodge has a flash update to the pcm to correct this condition. have no idea whether or not you truely have this as a real fault have never seen it. i would check the pcm connections and the grounds at the block for the battery and such have seen some issues there but never causing the p2509 let me know what you find jim

Check the 150 amp fuse in the PDB. When my alternator caught on fire that fuse blew and it did something similar to what you describe. Did throw that code, but I don't have a 2007 so it may not register for my 2001.
