louder than normal engine
hey jake good to hear from yah... like that new truck.. kinda makes me want something newer....do you guys think modding the isb 5.9s to have more towing power is worth all the money or should people just buy the newer common rails. ohh and back on subject what kinda noise do the vp44 make when there wearing out.... dont they clatter a lot...{more and louder than normal}i would feal a lot better if i knew thats what it was...ohh and ill try cracking them someday and see where that takes this noise. proly when i do the lash adjustment....
I dont think I would get too carried away with mods for towing. 50-60hp max. When you go higher then that you really start to heat things up and put more stress on parts then they were designed for. As for the vp 44 making the noise, I have never heard more noise come out of one, just less power/throttle responce and such when they start going bad on the mechanical side of the pump.
Mayfair, do you think adding the 2 stroke oil will mess with my DPF. i want to do everything to prolong the life of my truck, it is the biggest investment of my life so far and i want to make sure i do everything possible to take care of it. i know my truck was "Engineered for ULSD fuel only". but i work in the aerospace industry and i know just how inteligent these so called engineers really are. i can't wait until te warranty is up and i can rip that emissions crap out of my baby and let her breathe.
98, I don't think you should use 2-stroke in your 07. I don't know anyone that is useing it, put it that way.
Your truck is "supposed" to run fine with ULSD so I would let it be. I believe mine was designed to run with LSD, and since I can't get it anymore I add the 2-stroke to make up for the loss of lubricity that I honestly believe is gone. These people who work at Dodge and Cummins say that my year Ram will run just fone on the new stuff, and I'm sure it will, but I can't believe that it's just a "coincedence" that I'm seeing an awfull lot of folks with 2nd gens now replacing thier VP-44's.

no ive only had the truck maybe 4 months... i changed out the fuel filter and key bumped it a few times and it fired right off.. i can hear it cycle.. i know its pumping.... i do have a fuel pressure guage in the truck.... but i dont think the previous owner installed the sender as it reads a steady 20 all the time truck running or not.. and i havent seen a sender in any of the normal locations...as for mods jake i dont want to go to far.. i tow a 4500 pound travel trailer... but this thing pulls not much better than my 02 tahoe with a 5.3... and doesnt seem to getmuch better fuel mileage....so far i have been dissapointed in its pulling abilities. thats what leads me to believe there is something amiss. everyone talks about the cummins like its the cats meow...and i feal like im just getting a yawn...i am pretty much at a loss with it.. one of these days ill run it on a dyno and see where its at. i do know i want to upgrade the turbo to get some more air to the engine to cope with the extra fuel the hypertech is delivering...and ive been thinking about the banks power elbow to open up the turbo outlet to 4 inches ...and i like the banks turbo housing and wastegate control....unless you guys know of anything else out there better or cheaper that will get the job done...the banks stuff is pretty high and i like budget mods.... diesel stuff is high dollar...
If you still have the stock lift pump, replace it ASAP. It's not a matter of IF it's going to go, it's more of a matter of when, and when it goes, it's also going to take your VP-44 with it. Replacing it now will save the 44 for you, which is about a $1200.00 part. I'm running a FASS and I'm thrilled with it.
I'd also get that fuel pressure gauge replaced. Just because you HEAR your lift pump pumping, that doesn't mean that it's pumping enough fuel. Again, if you starve the 44, it WILL die. Monitoring your fuel pressure will let know know of a problem BEFORE you have one.
Those are the first 2 mods that I would do if I were you.

I agree, they are expensive. I think they are worth every cent just in having piece of mind, however if cah is tight, I'd give a look at teh Airdog. Though not as good IMO as the FASS, the dog would be my 2nd choice.
Whatever you decide though, don't hesitate at all.
