Well ... I've been adding 1oz of 2 stroke per gallon of diesel fuel to help keep the VP-44 lubed ever since the gov removed the sulphur from diesel fuel. Some folks say it's not nessary, however I feel more comfortable adding it.

My second thought would be that if you haven't adjusted your valves yet, it's definaely time to do so. That'll quiet it down some for sure, and may even give you better mpgs. I'm fixing to adjust mine as soon as it warms up a bit.

Like Mayfair suggested, if you haven't done a valve lash... "get her done!". The twostroke oil will help as well,

If you havent adjusted your valves, get them done. I ran mine on my 2ng gen at 80k cause I could hear some excessive noise. After checking them, they should have really been done at 50-60k. One of these weekends coming up (probably the 29-30), I'm gonna run them on my new truck.

my truck just rolled 62,000. it doesn't seem to be very loud but should i check the valves on it and possibly adjust them, or should they be ok?

it wouldnt hurt to run them to make sure things are still in check if they havent been done in a while.

I am sure the valve adjustment works but whatthe heck, My buddy hauls cars on a three car trailer and his 01 had 565k on it when he traded and he never adjusted the valves. The only repairs he made were on the VP44 a couple of times and a set of bearings in the tranny and of course a South Bend. The truck looked like crap but ran like new on trade for his 07 that he cant keep out of the shop[:@]

How hard is it to adjust valves. My truck is a 2003 H.O. I have 99,000 on it and I know they have never been done.

cool guys thanks for all the info... ive been chomping at the bit to get that lash adjustment done... was wondering if there was a mpg gain when they are adjusted correctly. when i listen to it very carefully i do hear a little bit if to much lash in it.. but what i am more concerned about is a little louder and slower. almost like a hammer and anvil slightly muffled... maybe nothing damaged just worn... my first assumption is the vp44... i have a hard time believing that it would be piston slap or wrist pin. its pretty deep noise wich makes me think its a larger part than the valves. i guess theres no way to test your vp44 other than pulling appart and checking for slapping and scarring. dont get me wrong the engine sounds great and runs strong.... but in comparison to every other 5.9 isb i have heard, mines noisier. maybe im just picking it to death and should just roll with the flow... if thats the case... ohhh SOMEBODY SLAP ME!!

p.s. we are havin a pretty good snow storm here in north west dallas today.. maybe ill shoot some pics..
