Default Hey Jakebrake - FASS relay question

I went out to fire up the Ram tonight, and it was a no go. At first I thought it was the same ole ( annoying ) thing where for some reason I have to crank and crank to eventually fire it up. I tried cranking a couple of times, and then I realized that the FASS wasn't making any noise. Before doing anything else, I remembered Jakes story about having a dead relay, so that's where I started.

I found and took out the relay, and off I went to try and find a replacement. I finally found one that has the same 5 pin configuration, but it looks different. I put it in, and the truck fired up ( again with that annoying crank and crank thing )

My question is this ... where can I find that breaker style relay that you got ( Jake )? Do you remember the part number? When I asked about them at the parts store the guy looked at me like I have 2 heads.

Thanks

there is a relay and there is a fuse. I replaced the fuse with a automatic reseting breaker. I got mine from napa.

So there is no resetting type of relay then?

Wasn't it your relay that blew out?

The relay is just a switch that uses alow amp input to control a high amp output. (basically its a magnetic switch). The relay didnt go bad on mine. The fuse just blew. So I replaced the fuse with an automatic breaker.

I wonder why my relay went bad then? Is that common? Should I keep a spare in the glovebox? My fuse was fine.

Thank God that I THOUGHT it was your relay, otherwise I never would have thought to replace it.

My truck did the hard start thing yesterday when I fired it up, but once I finally got it running again I let it idle in the driveway for about 5 minutes or so and then shut it down. This morning it did it again. What did you wnt me to try agin .... clamping the hose before it goes into my stock fuel filter housing? Is that what it was, I can't remember. I've gotta get this thing figured out.

relays do go bad. Its a rare occasion when they do go bad but I would keep one on hand. Mayfair, have you tried bumping the starter and letting the fass run a few seconds before trying to start it?

Yes, I bumped the starter about 3 -4 times and nothing changed. I'd bump the starter 3 times, and then I'd try and fire it up.I still had to keep cranking and cranking and cranking. What happens is after all of this cranking it TRIES to start, but never quite does. I somehow finally manage to get it going by cranking and cranking and cranking with my floot pinned to the floor on the gas peddal. Then it finally shutters to life, but it's an ugly start.

Any ideas?

Have you changed the filters on the FASS yet? Cause didn't you have a gelling problem a while back? It sounds like the same thing my saturn was doing until I changed the fuel filter.

Sounds like your vp44 is loosing prime. I dont remeber if the return line has a spot you can pinch off. You'll have to see if there is a spot where it turns to hose and see if you can pinch it off there then try starting it in the morning after you remove the clamp/vicegrips or whatever you use.
