Default Differential Cover Rusting

So I washed my truck over the weekend and noticed that my different cover is starting to rust. The black coating on it is chipping off and I have a nice 6"X6" area where rust is forming rather nicely. This is obviously more of a cosmetic issue, but when looking at the truck from the rear, it just looks ugly. My truck isn't even a year old yet, so aren't parts covered under warranty by rust? I briefly stopped by the dealership who said that this fairly common. However, on my way home, I didn't see a single Dodge Ram with a rusting differential cover. Should I push this issue more or am I just being picky?

You got an awesome point there man. They do cover any and all rust. Rust is rust. I would say push the issue, let us know how it does so I can do the same.

I don't think you're being picky, but based on dealership sterotypes (which majority of the time are true) I doubt they'd do anything for you. If you have a good dealership, they might. Are you looking for them to paint it or get you a new cover?

the next time you change your diff fluid, wire wheel the entire cover and get some high temp paint.

it is a typical thing yes to see these rear diff covers rust usually starting in the cinter of the cover. push the issue have replace a couple here at the dealer and also have painted a couple when doing diff services for the "nicer" customer so dont be a dick that never helps if you would like something from them. was this your selling dealer you went to sometimes you have better luck with them if you take it to them for warranty type repairs let us know

I believe the rust warranty only covers rust through (perforation) of body panels. I doubt they will warranty the diff cover, but you might get them to paint it.

no RP here. . .but I did notice nearly a solid a 1mpg gain when I changed all my fluids to Amsoil.

now, I dont want to push Amsoil on you, however I do believe changing to RP or Amsoil over the stock lubes will give you some benifit. some of the guy's here are amsoil dealers. . .I have a preferred customer acount and get the same discount. granted it costs $20/yr, I saved well over 100 bones just on my first order.

I use RP and yes it made a big difference in the reduction of heat in my rear axle. Amsoil is a top oil also. I just prefer RP for everything but the engine. I would not put RP in the Cummins engine due to the Molly used in the oil. I would use Amsoil if you wonted the best. I use the Rotella Syn. because I can go to Wal-Mart and get it. Plus I do not do the extended oil changes.
