fleetguard filter vs baldwin filter
Marketing Bulletin
After extensive laboratory tests on four Baldwin fuel filter crosses compared to four OE first-fit Fleetguard
filters, results showed that the Baldwin filters
DO NOT meet Cummins specifications. The following two
tests used SAE standard procedures for accurate measurements as per Cummins specifications.
• The Single Pass Efficiency Test used SAE J1985 that measures the capability
of fuel filters to retain solid particles
• The Dust Capacity Test used SAE J905 that measures the capability of fuel
filters to hold fine test dust.
Only the Fleetguard filters met and exceeded OEM specifications. The following test results prove
why Fleetguard is the first-fit filter.

SAE test procedures are very specific for heavy duty filtration. It is key that the proper fluid, dust, flow
rate, etc. be used correctly as per these procedures. Should these procedures not be followed, the results
become unrepeatable and irrelevant. Also, dust capacity results from different SAE tests cannot be
compared. It is common for many competitors to use automotive tests as opposed to heavy duty tests.
The same issue occurs with efficiency tests. Almost all of the major OEMs specify with a single pass
efficiency test. This is the most difficult test, since the filter only has one chance to catch the particle. In
contrast, some competitors use a multi-pass test, which gives the filter multiple opportunities to catch
particles. The same filter by single pass might be 98.7% efficient at 7 microns via single pass and 98.7%
efficient at 5 microns via multi-pass. Keep this in mind when comparing filters and reading test results.

Good find. I'm going to show that to a friend of mine who is a diesel mechanic. I think they switched their busses over to Baldwin filters a year or two ago.

Jimmy and I are debating which brand is better between the two.
I called Fleetguard (Cummins) today for the specs on my fuel filter.
the fleetguard FS1232 fuel/ water seperator fuel filter for the 1st gen CTD is rated 20 micron filtration @ 96% efficiency.

I am sure that If I call Balwin they will tell me there filter is superior. Same with fram.

Looks like kevin has a follower for the 20 micron club

Don't know much about the air filters but this is what I've read about the Fleetguard, Baldwin and a few other fuel filters:
The Fleetguard FS18000E is absolute at 7 microns (96% efficient at 5 microns) this is the OEM filter. Has a 14 gr. dirt holding capacity
Baldwin PF7977 is nominal at 1-2 microns and absolute at 5 microns, has a 24gr dirt holding capacity.
Donaldson lists P550785 is absolute at 10 microns.
The WIX 33585XE is nominal at 7 microns. 33585 is nominal at 10 microns.
Absolute is 98.7% efficiency and nominal is 50% efficiency.
