RE: exhaust temp
that is what the 03 and up engines are called. . .High Pressure Common Rail. if you look at the injector lines you will see all 6 are fed off a common line or fuel rail. earlier generations have 6 lines comeing off the pump, one per cylinder, our engines have one line comeing off the pump since the injectors are fired electricaly.

I don't think you are going to see 1600 unles you do some crazy mods to your truck. The only time I see 1200+ is when I'm towing something up a pretty good sized hill. It takes towing my 30 ft trailer loaded with gear, 10 bales of hay, water tanks full, 2 horses and about 100 gallons of diesel to hit 1300. I've got my programmer set to the highest setting and leave it there 100% of the time.

Mayfair, you'll see a lower temp naturally, may be around 200-300* less than you'd see pre-turbo.

The second one is in the down tube of the Pac-Brake exhaust brake, which is after the turbo, and connected to the Edge Attitude display. I usually see a difference of about 160 degrees on normal driving, and up to 200 degrees when humping up a grade with the 5'ver.
Watching the manifold sensor, which of course is the higher temp, I usually get nervous when I'm at the 1200 degree mark, and back off.

So if your truck is pulling max weight in bone stock form. Let's say 13000. And your doing the speed limit, going up the Grapevine in SoCal on a 90 degree day. And your truck is pulling the hill just fine, but your in it pretty hard. How are you suppose to know that your doing any damage? How are you suppose to know that you should let off?I'm pretty sure you'll have egt over well over 1350 for along time pulling that grade. But the factory doesn't give us a egt gauge. How is one suppose to know he/she is doing any damage? I know that putting an aftermarket gauge is a good idea. But these trucks are made for pulling, and the factorydoesn't give us a gauge stock.I have a feeling there are allot of old timers, pulling huge trailers, and heavy loads with no gauges and doing just fine.
