ORIGINAL: HankL

modifications that
let the tires roll with less horsepower
and push the vehicle thru the air with less horsepower
are dependable ways
to gain MPG
besides smaller tires, what else is there?

Mopar1973man, you hit the nail right on the frickin head. SLOW DOWN. I can't believe peoplethink they should be getting 20 mpg driving 80 mph in a 7000+ lb vehicle that has the aero dynamics of a brick. There's not much you can do in city driving other than slowly getting into the throttle from stops. But we all need to slow down on the hiways. Drive 55mph, not 75and watch you mpg go up.

Hey well i dont remember it but i know theres some ol farts here , nixon and the 55mph for highways................
im hoping the hybrid movement kicks into high gear and the ragheads do what they did 20 or so years ago and cut the price of oil in half so nobody would care about their mpg and the hybrid/elec movement gets killed.

as far as speed, i usually try to stay around 49 in the city, and 65 on hwy, but sometimes i take 1000+ mile trips and so its just damn hard not to go 85..

I'm really getting rather tired of even dumba$$ person that is on any forum telling my they get better MPG's at 75-80 MPH and worse at 55-60 MPH because its not in the sweet spot. This is a outright excuse for driving fast and being wasteful. If thesped limitwas set for 55 MPH everyone would be making killer saving and even the mighty Cummins would be fuel efficent! The faster you drive the more things are against you... (Wind, temps, aerodynamics, fluid temps, tires, road surface, etc.)

I'm currently going to pull my Cooper STT tires off and put my stock tires back on... This will gain a bit more MPG's offroad tires also create drag. For you guys with lift kits and oversized tires are creating more drag...

Honestly I'm not a heavy footed driver at all. I think what's killing me is that I live in the city with a lot of stop and go traffic.
Mayfair you are going to have a tough time cruise in city areas... The stop and go is really tough to do... You might have to find a different route to where you going that might give you a break in the stop and go traffic... Like myself everytime I stop and start rolling again I don't care how light your foot is you MPG are as low as 2 to 6 MPG to just get the truck rolling again... Once I get up to 25-35 my MPG rise back up rapidily...

I personally think it would be a great thing to have a maxium speed limit of 55mph across the U.S. And have if inforced.Somebody who is smarter than me should figure out how much less fuel would beusedif everybody who drives on the hiways/interstates slowed way the hell down. I bet it would be a crazy amount.

Well that is fairly easy to figure out... We'll use my numbers and infoI've got on my pictures in above post... We'll figure it out for a 1,000 mile trip.

So 65 MPH is 14 MPG

1,000 miles / 65 MPH = 15.38 Hours to travel
1,000 miles / 14 MPG = 71.42 Gallons of fuel required
$4.00 gallon x 71.42 Gallons = $285.68 Total Cost

and 55 MPH is 18 MPG

1,000 miles / 55 MPH = 18.18 Hours to travel
1,000 miles / 18 MPG =55.55 Gallons of fuel required
$4.00 gallon x55.55 Gallons = $222.20 Total Cost

So the total difference is between 65 and 55 MPH

18.18 - 15.38= 2.8 Hours longerfor a 1,000 miles!
71.42 - 55.55 = 15.87 Gallons of fuel saved!
$285.68 - $222.20 = $63.48 dollars saved by slowing down!

So like me its a 15 mile trip to town for groceries or fuel...

15 Miles / 55 MPH = 0.27 Hours (16.2 Mintues)
15 Miles / 18 MPG = 0.83 Gallons
$4.00 Gallon x 0.83 Gallons = $3.32 Costto travel

15 Miles / 65 MPH = 0.23 Hours (13.8 Minutes)
15 Miles / 14 MPG = 1.07 Gallons
$4.00 Gallon x 1.07 Gallons = $4.28

16.2 - 13.8 = 2.4 Minutes longer to go to town...
1.07 - 0.83 =0.24 Gallons Saved
$4.28 - $3.32 = $0.96 Dollars saved

But is worth it as I've shown... So you leave a bit earlier and you savings on fuel is great!

but you are only comparing 55 to 65, not 85 like most will travel on a 1000 mi trip. if you have a week or less off of work and need to make a 1000 mi trip to destination and a 1000 mi back, that time really adds up

Well, not saying this to you personally but, if that's how people are going to feel about it. Driving slower takes to much time, stop crying about fuel prices. Drive fast, and pay more. Just don't cry about it.
