Default Been Thinking Of Ditching The Rig

I really don't know what to do. With diesel prices so high and my truck payment a little steep, Ive been contemplating getting rid of my truck. I really dont want to but I'm at the point where it may be better. I'm stuck, what should I do?

Probably bring it back to stock and enjoy slightly better gas mileage. Selling the truck and you will be suffering a huge loss. Dealers usually will pay you a few thousand less than the official trade-in value since "diesel is more expensive" etc.

I was thinking the same thing, especially when they took my overtime and screwed me on bonuses at work. I am going to figure a way to keep diablo however. they reopened a limited amount of overtime and with some creative financing I can keep Him on the road

I'll be honest, I've REALLY been pondering what to do lately.

Here's my situation ...

I drive on average 1600 miles a month.

If I get a car that get's 30mpg - 1600 miles divided by 30mpg = 54 gallons

My truck gets about 14mpg - 1600 miles divided by 14mpg = 114 gallons

Gas - $3.20 gal X 54 gallons = $173.00
Diesel - $4.20 gal X 114 gallons = $480.00

$ 480.00
- $173.00

= $307.00 difference

Now then, should I take that $307.00 a month and spend it on a car that get's 30mpg, ( probably something in the 10K range )or just suck it up?

That's where I'm at right now ...

Only problems with these numbers is that you assume this price difference will last between gas and diesel. And I'm not saying it's because diesel will go down but that gas will continue up (jumped 30 cents here yesterday) [:@] Plus you have to factor upkeep and insurance for another vehicle (unless you're talking replacing the truck instead of supplimenting it).

Not trying to say it's a bad decision, but if you're adding a vehicle the extra insurance and maintenance eats away at that difference.

I agree 100%, and that's the only reason whay I haven't done anything yet. If gas comes up and meets the cost of diesel like it usually does, then I'll feel a LITTLE bit better, but if it stays at a dollar less a gallon, then I've got some serious thinking to do.

Ok so fuel is expensive, but look at trucks. You paid probably close to around $50k for that truck, not including the add-ons, you would seriously get rid of that truck because the petro companies are raising fuel prices. Don't let them get the best of you. Besides look how much fuel prices have gone up over the years, nobody is ready for it, but everyone adapts, a few cut backs here and there and you got fuel money. Eventually you won't even realize the difference. If you have to, buy a beater to get you to and from work-something that gets good mpg's. I know if I had your truck I sure would never get rid of it.

That's what I'm thinking about doing, although not necessarily a "beater". I want a car that gets good mpg's, but not one that I have to worry about wether or not it's going to start. I still want something reliable / dependable. That's why I was thinking about spending around 10K and get something that is newer. Right now I've been looking at Mini Coopers and Scion XB's. I think both are cool looking / dependable ( I think ) cars.

Well thnx for the replies. Yeah I dont want to get rid of the truck either, just because of gas prices and a slightly steep payment. I guess what I was thinking was get something a little cheaper and I can start attempting to pay off some things. Hopefully I'll stick with it, but only time will tell, and we'll see what the future holds for me. Maybe winning the lottery!

Mayfair, you can't tow your "new" camper with one of them
