If toyota was thinkin ahead, how come they never thought about building a diesel like pretty much everybody else? And how was adding a full roll down rear window thinkin ahead, what were they preparing for? Ill give toyota one thing, dependability, but what good is a toyota good for. Until a few years ago they never made a fullsized truck with a fullsized bed.
you just answered your own question, no sense in putting in a diesel in a mid size truck.... the car market was as american as apple pie, then the japs came in slowly with affordable dependable cars, then once they got their foot in the door they started to expand their horizons and now make suvs and luxury cars, the lexus is the most dependable luxury car in the market, and hands down better than any american car in its price point... this is the same thing with trucks, toyota has had the taco for a very long time, and the t-100 was a good mid sized truck.. then toyo wanted to get into the full size market and they did that by testing the waters with the tundra a mid/almost full sized truck. they built their reputation up in the truck market to a certain extent and now that theyve got the hang of it they came out with the new tundra which hands down out performs any 1/2 ton truck on the market, torque/hp/payload/0-60 empty or loaded/kills in the slalom course, braking (yes all those tundra commercials are real, not doctored)......... so now that they are kicking *** in the gas market they are looking at a light duty diesel....... cummins has been around for 80 or so years....... toyota is making the right move in producing a light duty diesel as with gas prices continuing to rise fewer people are going to buy a 3/4-1 ton truck unless they really need em. yes diesel gets better mpg, but if you put a light duty diesel that doesnt come with the 6k increase on sticker and on a lighter veh the mpg will be much better than on the traditional diesel trucks and without the added upfront cost, yet will still get the durability of a diesel engine and the longevity and resale that is almost inherent with toyota...
