Earth Day
My 5 year old son has been telling me that we need to take care of our mother for the past few weeks. I chalked it up to some liberal, tree huggercrap they were teaching the Kindergarten class at his school. I have never been much of an environmentalist to say the least. Hell I'm one of those idiots that has dumped used motor oil on the ground. But he did get me thinking.
I watched a show last night on PBS about the environment. One of the issues was right here in my back yard. The Striped bass population in the Chesapeake bay is suffering from some sort of bacteria. Growing up in Va. my dad used to take me fishing on the bay. These are some of the best times in my life. I plan on doing everything I can to make sure my son will be able to do the same thing with his kids.
How does this relate to this forum?
1 There seems to be a lot of people on here concerned with how much black smoke the can put out of there exhaust?
2 Some are removing the emissions components that were installed just for the sake of a few horsepower and smoke. (What in the world could you be towing that would be worth doing this?)
3 What are we teaching our kids when we say "look at that black cloud of smoke isn't it cool?"
4 I have a 6.7 on order to replace my current 5.9 andI can guarantee you that I will no alter the emssions on it.
Are there others that feel this way on here, or am I turning into a tree hugger?
Thanks,
Stephen
How does adding all of the EPA junk to the 6.7 engine to get cleaner air help when to do so you need to burn 25% more diesel fuel to get it? Don't see how using 25% more diesel helps us get cleaner air. BTW did you know that methane gas that leaks out of the ground all over the world is a bigger pollutant/pollution problem then CO2?
JMHO.
Sorry Truss, but I agree with DB.
Having to use MORE fuel to accomplish the same job is more wastefull in my eyes than the opposite. Sure, some guy's tune their motors to smoke more than others, and there you might have a point, however I dissagree with all of this "alleged" pollutant crap on a basicaly stock motor minus the emissions stuff.

besides, all that crud you see in the air ismostly the fumes from gas that evaporates as it is being pumped into the tank. now since diesel has a higher boiling point than gas this doesnt happen. not only that but the black stuff that comes out of the tail pipe is mostly carbon, very few NOx comeing from that since when most of the black smoke you see is at low RPM's, and not hot enough to combine Nitrogen and Oxygen into the harmfull chemicals. now a gasser will create those NOx emissions quick since the combustion of gas is hotter.
I don't think any of us encourage anyone to cut out their emissions. But if i can fix a problem before it occurs- not saying I would have one but you never know, I will. And like previously posted to be more emissions free the engine goes into regen mode burning more fuel to get egt's up to burn off pm that collects in the dpf- the 6.7 doesn't produce harmless fumes its just reduced.
As far as exhaust, heres a tid bit Gore and company will not tell you... 95% of the green house gas is made up of good ole water vapour, about 3.5% is CO2, the rest is other gasses. Now go back to your chemistry/biology class, CO2 is needed by plants, its food! They convert the CO2 and sunlight (Big word... photosynthesis) into Oxygen, which all living things need. Now if we heed Gore and his posse of nitwits, and we stop the production of CO2s guess whats gonna happen!?
People have forgotten grade school science, just to get their 15mins of fame!
As for other polutants such as processing chemicals, agircultural pesticides/hebacides run offs and untreated human wastes hitting the worlds waterways, thats where we should be pointing fingers. This is whats killing off fish. Gather around the kin folk and lobby yer leaders get em to stop this food for fuel BS!!...

The dpf on the newer engines does nothing to remove harmful gasses caused by burning deisel. The only thing it does is reduce soot which is too heavy to get that high into the atmosphere. The dpfwas put on trucks to helpreduce smog (which is comprised of particles10 micronsand smaller). As for harmful (greenhouse) gasses we now have egrs on diesel engines. Recirculating exhaust gasses through the engine cause lower cylinder temps. Lower cylinder temps mean less NOx emissions. If you wait till 2010 emission restricitions hit. Diesels will have a urea canister on them. Basically injecting "****" into the engine which will bring the NOx emmisions to basically zero
hi trussman, and welcome to poluters anonymous.
it's doubtful that the oil you dumped is killing the fish...but thank you for stopping because it's probably gonna screw something up in 20 years. i myselfam guilty of dumping oil...and doing burnouts....and driving a vehicle w/out a cat.converter (yes, i'm legal). i'm also trying to better the environment too...i'm converting some pasture back to woods (more trees means more O2 for us) and my next commuter vehicle will be a wvo diesel convert....and i'd like to put some solar panels on the barn (if budget permits)...but the one thing i won't do is vote democrat...i'm almost rather blow some dude w/ crabs and syphilis

Good luck with the WVO project. I converted a 2000 VW golf in 2005 with a Frybrid kit. Ran it for about 16K miles and loved it. Just too much time spent filtering the WVO andI had a hell of a filtration system to do it.Sold it about a year after I converted it. Sure was fun riding for free on that stuff man I miss it now with diesel over $4 a gallon.
As far as voting democrat, I would die first. I'm not sure how anyone could get that I am a liberal from my post, but I am the furthest thing from a democrat. I just want to make sure my kids have the opportunity to hunt and fish in Va.thesame as I have. I have pictures of me with Ollie North when my local Va Senator was running for office, I helped with his campaign.
thanks,
Stephen
