Cumminalong, I have always agreed with most or all of your opinions on guns, I too have a browning Bar in 300mag with the boss system tuned in. It is a great long range gun, but you said your favorite hunting gun is a 742 woodmaster and that it is reliable? I belive gunsmith's call it the jam master, and it has nothing to do with getting dirty.

I've had zero malfunctions with it.

Like any other gun, certain chamberings of certain bullet types don't work well with them, especially if it was originally designed for one type of round and then converted to another round.

Mine in .30-06 has been flawless. I've walked away with my shoulder bruised from cranking off with it.

It's like a 1911, sometimes they run perfectly, sometimes they won't feed a damn thing except ball ammo.

I got this off of a Remington web site "742's were discontinued about 25 years ago due to an inherent design flaw that cause's the nine lug bolt to jam the action open. The action would torque to the right as it opens and the lugs would gouge the inside of the receiver, eventually the gouges would get so big the lugs would catch on the ridges and jam open. It only seemed to happen to guns that had been fired 500-1000 rounds, and most 742 owners probably never fired over a box of shells a year." So I guess if you buy one check the bolt.

Hmmmm? That's interesting. I'm pretty religious about cleaning them after they've been fired (detail strip, not field strip) and haven't noticed anything like that and I've put hundreds of rounds out of that thing.

Not you got me wondering, I'm gonna have to take a peek later on.

You've got to be the only other person I've talked to with one.

I like mine. It's light, short.........recoils like a bastard and is LOUD as all hell, but is great for beating the bush with.

It won't win any precision shooting competitions, but it'll ring an 8" steel gong at 200. More than I intend to use it for.

I've got a Leupold 2 3/4 power, heavy center post scope on it. Real quick to pick up and not too much power for the distances I intend for it.

Very nice indeed. Every law abiding citizen should have one and should know how to use it. Preferably some sort of training. If you are able to get a CCW, you absolutely should take the class. They're dirt cheap and very informative.
CCWs are the first step in accepting that firearms are not a right, but a privledge that the govt can take away.

BTW: I have a FL permit, but its almost useless w/ the castle law and take your gun to work law.

The 742 that I am refering too, doesnt shoot well. It was one of my favorite hunting guns. The barrel was cut off years ago, and they did a pretty good job, crowned and everything. It is probably 17" or so. I have a strait 4 power redfield on it, with see thru mounts. The gun isbeat up, but shot nice, until the bolt finaly failed. It was great for brush with the short barrel and 4 power scope. I wish I could bring myself to do the same thing to my new one (1980's model). The guide I use in cananda for bear hunting also has one with short barrel but his was modified with a hack saw behind the wood shed (no scope). He trust's it to track bear, but it looks pretty bad, probably worse than mine.
