Default EGT gauge problems

I was helping my uncle with his 94 and his autometer EGT gauge isn't working. If the probe is in the pipe the way it should be then the guage will read about 100 but if you take it out and let it just float in the hole while the truck is running then it will be an accurate read. I know the probe works because I had it on my truck and we were able to take a torch to it and the temp went up. If anyone has any ideas let me know! Thanks!

You might have it in TOO deep. (No sexual conotations there).

If it's in too far and touching the manifold on the other side, your reading is gonna be way low.
