Diff Ratios For Best Fuel Economy
Can someone out there give me information on Fuel economy on the Cummins Diesel coupled with Automatic Trans 2 wheel drive, and 4.10 Diff versus the 3.55 Diff.
I know the 4.10 is a good hill climber, but most of my driving is mainly flat land running. Occasionally I will get into the Mountains, but load wise not heavy usually an old car/truck on my 22 Ft. Tandem Trailer, and some Parts in the Bed.
My Trailer weighs in at 2400 lbs., and cargo as mentioned would not exceed 6000 lbs. For a total of 8400 lbs., Trailer & Cargo, plus Truck.
Looking to buy one and looking for some feedback on the different Ratios, thanks guys.
If it's is a newer truck, your options are 3.73 and 4.10.
For that little weight, get the 3.73's.
If you ain't pullin' a heavy 5'ver or TT all the time, you don't need those 4.10's.
If you're gonna be over 10K, ALL the time, then get the 4.10's. If not, and you are mostly up to speed and running flat ground, get the 3.73's.
I've had 8 - 9K behind my truck, w/ 3.73's and it's not even noticeable. You actually have to look back once in a while to make sure it's there.

I have 4.10's, and while the are nice to have, my HWY travel is limited when it comes to speed.
mileage difference is probably around 2-3mpg since the engine is turning a higher RPM

I have a 3.73 gear on my rig and from my experience, my truck tows fine. Granted, I have it mildly tricked out, but I on occasion tow a 16k 5'ver thru the flat lands as well as the mountains.
In todays fuel crisis, I'd try to maximize your economy as much as is resonable. Just an opinion here.

You mention you have the 3.55 Ratio in your ride. In my first posting on this subject, I went to the high side of the weight, not saying that I wouldn't maybe haul that. With regards to your 3.55 is it that much of a difference that you feel you need taller gears?
The Ram I am looking at is the 2nd Gen., and all that I have seen are either 3.55. or 4.10. I was leaning toward the 3.55 myself but there is a lot of different opinions here as to the weight and terrain conditions.
does anyone know if the 3.73 Gears are available for the older Rams, if so what would the approx price tag be on the conversion, parts wise?
Also are there any mods that have to be done for the conversion?
I thank each and all who answered my first post on this subject, gives me a new look at some options.
3.55 would be good hwy economy gears though. If you're not having a problem pulling your equiptment around, I wouldn't change woli.

As long as you don't want to be the first one to the top of the hill with a load then your better off with the 3.55 vers the 4.10 when it comes to fuel mileage. If your worried about being slow up some big steep hill then go for the 4.10.
Getting to the top of the hill, is the least of my worries, as long as it gets there. I'm over that stage of of the line etc.
Just both interested in the proper diff Ratio for the pulling of what I have mentioned in my initial post on this subject.
The cross, and head windsas some of you know, that the Prairies dish out can be hard on the Fuel Tank.
Its only expected that will happen if your not going in the same direction as they are.
I am currently running a Gas powered Ram 5.2 and it does one hell of a good job, for the size. Its the high revs to keep up to reasonable highway speeds thats hard on the wallett.
So I figure if I'm right and if someone sees it in a different light, the Diesel even though the cost of Fuel is higher, for the difference in mileage it would be less expensive.
This is where I am wondering about the Diff Ratios, and how a 3.55 vs a 4.10 differ if excessive.
I usually run the Mid West about 3 times a year and my round trips are 3500 miles.
Again thanks guys for the info, sure appreciate it.
