Valve adjustment time?

Hello Gents Im a Newbie to the Diesel life.I read the DIY on valve adjustment on the forum and I thought it was a great write up. My question is with diesels how do you know when the valves need adjustment, there is so much clinking and clanking with a diesel, can you tell by just the noise like a gaser? Or do you just test the clearance whenever? Thanks
I could actually hear one vavle tapping with the hood open and the engine warmed up and idling. It was a little hard to hear, but after a few days, I convinced myself to check it, and it was out of tolerance at 50K miles. I think I will make it part of my 50K mi service from here on out.
Ok goog to know, I have a 06 that hit 80K and I did all of the fluid service last night. I thought about checking the valves after I read the DIY post. Thanks for the quick reply Superdave!
