Ok, well I decided to change my axle fluid myselfthis weekend (since the dealer wants $120 an axle to do it).

What fluid do you guys recomend?
If it is Amsoil, where do I buy it?
How do I drain the fluid?
If I have to open the case to drain, is there a gasket I need to buy and replace, or do you use rtv sealant?
How much does it hold?

google amsoil (your city name) and you should find a local garage that sells it

unbolt the pumpkin, start with the lower 2 bolts, and then un torque the top two, unscrew the top two about 5 twists (still want them to be connected) then undo the lowest bolt to the left and right of the lower two that you took, then take a flat head screwdriver and slowly wedge it between and rock back and forth opening it (note dont use excessive force as it could chip/ding your pumpkin). once its drained a bit, then undo the next 2 on the right and 1 on the left, that should only leave top half bolts, use the screw driver again adn that should get most of the oil out, then unbolt the rest and then take it off... use break cleaner and a razor to scrape the sealant off. check the teeth for chips and the magnet for metal filings..... youll need a small tube of rtv silicone, may buy two so you dont have to worry.. then youll make a continuous bead looping every bolt hole and then re attach and let sit a few minutes (some say an hour, i do it right away) . you can buy a gasket (check mr gasket), good luck with the front, youll want a swivel socket and dont remove the breather tube for better access, work around it...

amsoil is the best, since yall dont have to dick with the c(u)nt clips like i do in my rear end amsoil all the way and you dont have to worry about it going bad, esp now that you know where your breathers are and you can better judge if water could have gotten in, check out that website i posted though 50 bucks aint a bad price.....

as for amsoil itll run you about 70 for the rear and 50 for the front, youll also need to buy a hand pump (12 bucks, sold at every garage),and the pump wont pump the whole bottle so when you get two bottles and they both have stuff left in em just fill into one bottle...

check your owners manual for the amounts, prolly5 or 6 pintsin the rear and 4 in the front, fill about a half inch below the hole, oh and make sure when youre filling it up you are on a flat surface, also once you fill it drive it around the neighborhood and then recheck level as itll get sucked into other parts of your pumpkin and then fill back up, it wont be much though..

 

If I remember correctly, I think I used 7 quarts of Mobile 1 Full Synthetic when I did the front and rear. Our trucks have a re-usable rubber gasket, so you don't have to buy anything to seal it back up.

With my fabtech lift I have 11 zerks, 8 on the upper and lower control arms, 2 on the tie rod ends (one at each wheel), and the PITA on the front driveline.

 

Ok, so I think I go the gear oil picked out for the diff's.... Amsoil 75W-90 Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube, what do ya think?... ShouldI use the Severe Gear stuff instead?

I can buy 2 gallons for $38.30 each, that should be enough right?

I will also pick me up one of the pump things to put on the gallon jugs.

So it sounds like there are only 3 grease points (two tie rods and one on the axle), what kind of grease should I be using?

And finally, according to my manual I am supposed to change the fuel filter, should I buy this from the dealer or is it something I can get at the auto parts store (autozone)?

Fuel filter needs to be a fleetguard.....I think there is a TSB on it. I got my first 2 from Geno's garage. I've got a friend that has his own parts dealership and we called a month or two ago to his supplier and found out he can get the fuel filters for around $5 a piece and oil filters around $3.50. I just have to send him the exact part numbers, but either way he is going to be ordering me a case of each very shortly.

Hrm 75-80/90 is what my front uses, but my rear is 75 140 severe gear, 100k mile life. Is that the the dodge manyouall says or amsoils site?
since youre getting amsoils gear lube, what are you putting in your engine, I run amsoil 5 30 25k mile and will change at 10k miles. I'm tempted to push it to 20k. I use the amsoil filter as well.

 

Right now, while I am still using non-synthetic, I am having the dealer change the engine oil. It cost $49.95 at my local dealer, I think it would be hard for me to even by the oil and filter for that much.

After my last run-in with the dealership, I probably won't go back (don;t trust them with my truck anymore). Not sure what I will buy for engine oil, since I haven't had to do it yet? I guess I might as well go with amsoil oil and filter, as well as amsoil grease while I'm at it .
