Default Update: VP44

Well since im sure that the pump isn't goin to fix itself I guess I am goin to have to come up with the money and buy one. I keep getting a p0216 which is injection pump timing failure and also will loose almost all throttle response for about 10 seconds at a time. It gets really annoying on the highway and im afraid that sooner before later that the truck will end up not having any response at all and U will have to have it towed. All of the places that I talked to today gave me a wholesale price of $1200! I thought that since I am buying it through my dad's garage I would find one cheaper but I haven't had any luck so far. Does anyone know of a good place to purchase a new pump that is a good price and of good quality? Woli who did you go with? Also how bad is the install? Is there a DYI on it? My dad is a little afraid of tackling it since we usually don't do that much diesel work at the garage. Thanks for the help1

Default RE: VP44 trouble

i bough it from lukesdiesel on dieselbombers.com
nice guys and costed me 1050$ but i think price jumped a tad since then anyway there is a 400$ core deposit for this

went really smooth if u somewhat mechanicaly inclined, only part u have to watch really is the keyway into the shaft since u cant see it u have to line it up really straight than slide it back...
the sproket will stay there since there is no chain on this its gear driven....
i have big hands so i had troubles to put #6 injector line back in place but that its....

HO YEAH DONT SEPARATE THE FUEL LINES!!! KEEP THEM IN PACK OF 3 ELSE UR SCREWED(no i didnt do that mayfair)

I Hope you find good directions, if not , just remove stuff out of the way like air intake boot and the four bolt holing the heater. remove the throttle controll bolts and push it aside. The electric plughas a plastic lock that slides out an inch and pull plug.Remove the engine block vent hose and cap on the front of engine.this one gave me a fit, it screws of counter clock wise, with your wifes make up mirror and flash light you can see the drive gear. theres a line that need to point down andkey notch on top. with a pipe wrench you can turn the nut behind the fan to line these up.You will need a gear puller, top of the line spare no expence. (a scrape peice of steal worked for me,the bolts needed are metricif I remeber maybe 6 m to screw into the drive gear.drill two holes1 5/8 inch apart for these bolts then one inbetween and weld a nut to hold the push bolt). I just left it there till I find a pump. Remove the fuel banjo bolts and move them aside. Remove the injector lines, first 3 all the way and the back you can get by. under them there is a brackedremove the 2 bolts and the 4 holding the pump. and you should be holding your prize. Dodge sells them for $1700, U pull it had one put I had to buy the block also for $1800. I really don't have a place to put a 5.9 block. On Ebay their $965. Good Luck

thanks alot guys again for all the info. i heard that a steering wheel puller will work and i got one of them. I guess i am going to have to do the job sooner than expected since it finally almost quit today. i was in the middle of a bridge when it gave out and after playin around with the chip a little i was able to limp it to the garage. one of the performance shops around me is trying to sell me a hot rod pump and i was wondering if it would be worth the extra money or if i should just stay with a regular bosh rebuild?

When you change the pump, you might as well save yourself some headache down the road and change the cam sensor while you have the pump off.
