Default 06 CTD Exhaust Question.

Hello everyone, I'm new here to the site and I have already learn a wealth of info. I just bought my first diesel last winter. AsI crawled under it to remove the exhaust I noticed it had three "containers" under it. The first being the cat, second being the muffler, and the third is what? It sit/hangs right over the rear axle.

Sounds like it could be a resonator of some kind. Been so long since my 06 had a stock exhaust I don't remember.

Might want to shoot some pictures for the guys to look at.

And most important.....[sm=welcomesign.gif][sm=welcomesign.gif][sm=welcomesign.gif]

That's all I could think of it being. It's the only thing that would be BEHIND the muffler.

Mine didn't have one on it.

All I had was cat and muffler.

Use the Post Reply button down below this post, to the left.

Don't use the fast reply.

When you go into the editor, there will be a box at the bottom that says embed picture in post.

Check the box and then hit theupload link next to it.

The pic won't show up right now, the galleries are a bit screwed up. It will show a red X, but the pic will show if you click on it once you post.

I have an 06' and what you're looking at is a resonator.

I suppose with all that sound deafening equipment underneath the exhaust is as quiet as I remember it to be.

Are you interested in replacing the exhaust? There are many good brands out on the market, and will undoubtedly open the throat of your beast.

Thanks for the info. I haven't had a chance to post pics yet b/c I keep getting hammered by the storms and tornados out here in Indiana. I was thinking of removing my cat and leaving the muffler. I have heard a few trucks in town and asked the owners what they have done, and thats what they told me they did. Now with this resonator on there I'm not sure if that is what I want to do. I want a throaty deep exhaust and maybe even some turbo sounds out of the exhaust. I just don't want loud, crackling, popping pipes. I want it to sound nice not like what they call out here "redneck" pipes. Any ideas on what I should remove and keep for the mean time until I can put a turbo back exhaust on my truck?

The Cummins doesn't sound like that at all. You can't make it pop, crack or any other noise like a gasser does. I have a before and after video with sound of when I removed the muffler and cat and replaced it with a single flow-thru Aero 4040xl. There is not much difference between straight piped and what I have. With the aero , it is just slightly quieter than straight piped.
Here it is............ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYGixWYr1Js#GU5U2spHI_4
I think it is the perfect sound for a cummins. I am sure we all have our preferences but this is mine.

I'm pleased with the MBRP muffler and cat delete setep I put on a while back. Not obnoxiously loud, but a good tone while still being able to make it rumble when I get on it.

Not sure what the third piece your seeing is although I assume it would be a resonator. My 06 didn't have anything other than the cat and muffler under it.

Just a muffler delete on mine $100 at the local muffler shop. Left the cat for now. Not too obnoxious but turns some heads.
