Anyone go camping with their CTD? If so have a quesiton about a pick up camper.
Disclaimer ... I've never owned a slide in camper but the laws of physics are not on your side here.
The rear axle of my shortbed sits at about 3' 3" from the front of the bed. If you're putting a 10' slide in the bed, you have 6' 9" behind the axle. That much weight out back of the axle is going to mess with your center of gravity front to back not to mention the drivability of the truck. You're taking alot of weight off the front axle with this setup. I'd consider an 8' slide in but not a 10' one.

mike thats what the fat chick is for
well how much does this camper weigh? How much weight is actually behind the axle? How much weight is packed between the axles?

With my Camper it has a center of gravity marker and it shows sitting about 2" => 3" past the rear Axle center line. Also most of these type of Campers havean ~20 =>30 Gallon fresh water tank at front of the Camper good for front ballast. My camper sit withing 3" of the front of the cargo box. I agree, I wouldn't ever put anything longer then an 8.5'ft in a short bed. You need to beef up the rear leaf spring support, and that will help allot with steering control. GVWR shouldn't be exceeded above 10Klbs. I'm running about 9600lb. with everything The 2500's singles are ratedat GVWR 9000lbs and the 3500 singles are rated at GVWR 10000lbs. That the only difference for the Dodge short beds. It's all in the rear leaf springs. I believe this how it is.[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

depending on the model of Sun lite camper the center of gravity is anywhere from 23" to 45" from the front of truck box. Haven't really taken the time to measure, I believe the axel is close to 39" from the front of box, so a 10' slide in would be pushing it. With a center of gravity close to the 45 inch mark, you are putting the weight behind the axel which ain't good.
Hey, thanks! I didn't know about the center line marker or even where the center of gravity was on these things. I learnt somethin' new today.
I bet these things catch a pretty good wind going down the highway. So if you are over the center line, I wonder what affect a head wind would have on ya.

My buddy runs 80 pounds in his air bags just to get it to sit level, like I said I can't picture a 10 footer in a short box, espicially if you are going to tow with it.
