24 Valve Cummins Diesel
Hi all,
I have heard the issues that can come up with the 24 valve Cummins. I heard the fuel pump is not lubricated as well as the 12 valve and can have problems. I was wondering, what milagedoes this usually occur at? I saw a 1998.5 24 valve Cummins with 171k and a 5 speed manual for sale. Would the 24 valve problems be near on this truck, or do they occur at a much later milage? Also, I am interested in WVO conversion. How do the 24 valve Cummins handleWVO compared to the 12 valves?
Thanks,
Jack

The P7100 fuel pump on the 12V engines is lubricated by engine oil rather than the fuel itself as is the case in the VP44. Thus they are commonly referred to as the "million milers" — for good reason.
From what I understand, the 12Vs are also a lot more flexible in regard to running alternative fuels... WVO, waste motor oil, tranny fluid, etc. That said, I've never tried anything but good ol' #2 in mine.

I don't think there's a set number that you need to keep an eye on. It can happen at any time. I run 2 stroke oil in my fuel to help keep my 44 lubed and happy. 1oz per gallon. Either way, if you DO need to replace a 44, they usually run about $1,200.00 bucks. I'm still not too keen on the 100% useage of WVO. It apparently tends to clog up the fuel lines over time. Too much of a PITA for me.
I have 63 k on my truck and just had to put a vp44 in it. it depends on what kind of fuel the truck has been running and how well it has been taken care of. I also mix 1 oz of 2 stroke per gallon of fuel and so far with the new pump the truck has tons more power and responsiveness!
A 1999 24V is NOT common rail, just electronic timing injection pump. Personally I wouldn't do WVO on it since there are enough problems with feeding that thing properly on diesel fuel, let alone something even thicker. However, lubrication wise it should love veggie oil since it should have even more lubrication that diesel. These guys make a kit for both VP44 (1998.5 - 2002 trucks) and common rail trucks.

a 99 is not common rail. i think that it would be a poor choice for wvo since the injection pumps are so touchy. i would look either for a 12 valve or an 03 and up 5.9.

How severe could these injector problems be? I guess what I mean is, how likely is it that I would have issues? If I found a good deal on a 24 valve and bought it and ran WVo, am I likely to be sorry later?
Thanks
