speedometer not working

Default speedometer not working

i just bought a 1997 2500 4/4 and the speedometer was working.then it just quit working, any help would be qratefull

Check the speedo gear on the transmission housing... sounds like it might have come loose or rotated so the gears don't contact any more. I can't remember the details, but it's on the driver's side of the tranny. There's a plastic gear in there, changeable so that you can adjust for different size tires, etc. Anyway, the speedo gear housing has to be rotated in a certain orientation to the tranny in order for the teeth to mate up. When I went to change the gear out to account for larger tires, it about drove me mad until I saw the little alignment markings.

If that's not it, I dunno... maybe someone else can chime in with suggestions?

speed sensor on top of the rear diff housing... is the abs light on as well?

the abs light was on it had broken wires so i changed them front to back.the light is now off
from what i have read the speed sensor is on the rear of the transfer case not on the rear end is this wright.
does the sensor just push in .

humm, the sensor should be on top of the rear diff... somewhere in there they added that sensor to measure speed. if yours does not have one then it'd be in the trans. I havent swapped that one but I'd imagine it'd be held in with a bolt...
