New diesel owner
Hello everyone. I have been lurking in this forum and finally decided to say Hello and ask a few questions.
I recently purchased a “new to me” 05 Ram 2500 4x4 quad cab shortbed Laramie with the CTD and 54,000 miles. I love this truck. I have only had it for about three weeks and filled it up this morning for the first time since I have had it… I was (and still) drive a 99 Ram 1500 4x4 sport with a 5.9 gas. I have been researching fuel mileage and driving styles in this forum and wanted to make sure I understand.
So… I should not drive it the same asdriving a gas. I should let the it warn up before I take off, let it idle a little before shutting down, accelerate slowly with a light foot, and try to keep the RPMs steady when going up and down hills. Right????
I calculated my MPG at 16.875 and the trip computer says I am getting 20.5. Is 16.875 normal and why is my trip computer so far off? I did reset the trip computer when I bought the truck. As far as know the truck is all stock except the tires are one size larger.
Should I be able to hear the turbo? It seems the only time I can hear it, is when I take my foot off the pedal after accelerating.
THANKS in advance for all advice and comments.

You can't hear the turbo very good on these trucks unless you have an aftermarket air intake or a chip on your truck, they are very quiet and the diesel motor is quite loud. Your gas milage sounds about right for all around driving, I get about 17 city and 20-22mpg highway if I keep it under 65mph. If you drive the speed limit you'll get great gas milage. Be sure to change your fuel filter often and keep your air filter clean, they are both very important to a diesel. Don't pay any attention to your overhead reading, they are never right. You must hand calculate your mpg's if you want an accurate reading. Welcome aboard and enjoy your stay here!
Welcome to DF...
another thing you can do to maximize your mpg is to keep boost below 10 psi, 8 is better. If your truck is 100% stock, choose wisely when upgrading, some mods hurt & some help mileage.
Parts... is that the new ride in your sig?

hi whipper
I just found this forum by accident. It's sweet to find a community of owners dedicated to Dodge, especially with the cummins diesel section. These guys/gals know their stuff.
have fun with your new toy.

whipper: The overhead conselwhith the bogameter_Lie_O-Meter is a yoke. Only hand calculations are accurate. My Speedo is dialed in for my tire size and right on the numbers, but this thing of a Meter is bull****. I don't understand why they don't jive. You put an aftermarket controller on it and those controllers can measure the MPG accurately. This is an annoying Chrysler_Dodge story. They knew that the MPG on later Diesels was going to go down in regards to earlier Gens.[sm=icon_cheers.gif]
