Default exaust question

Hey guys, I am new here and just wanted to say there is a lot of good info here. I have one question for ya. I have an '04 CTD HO with no mods and was wondering if I would recieve any benefits in power or more importantly fuel mileage by taking my muffler off and just splicing in a piece of pipe in its place? Will it cause me any problems? I have been dying to do it for the sound, but I used to have a '97 and it killed my fuel economy. Just wondering how my '04 would react. I am not interested in making any other mods right now due to a money crunch. Just looking for some cheap sound and hopefully a few more MPGs. Thanks guys.

have you considered putting a aero 4040 in the stock mufflers place. They have great reviews and nice sound. or you can go with stacks if you want that cool big rig look.
