Bed cover question? Roll up or slider?
Looking to add a cover for the bed and was looking at the roll up style but found one called a jack rabbit. Anyone have one or use one and how much bed does it take up in the front when fully open? Thanks!
I don't know anything about the jack rabbit, but I did get the Access Lorado cover for my truck and I love it. Most places sell it for $430-$500, but I found a place online that would sell it for $350 if you called in to get the "special price". Their price is too low to advertise on their website.
I have a Jack Rabbit on my 01. I would not buy one again. Reason being although they look nice and work as advertised the seal they use against the tailgate is worthless. When it rains the back of the truck is always wet, I also have a bed rug in the box. Then every year you have to open the box that the covers the roll up into to clean it out to keep the drains clean.
If you live in an area that has winters like I do then you have to really make sure that there is no standing water in the box where the cover rolls into. Over the winter if ice builds up then you run the risk of the plastic box destroying itself, that is why I have to pull the lid off and clean out the box every fall. Seems to be full of leaves and other crap that will stop the two drains from getting rid of the water.
The box the cover rolls up into sits about 3-4 inches off the truck box and is about 10 inches wide, that should give you an idea of size it takes up. Again I would say no to the Pace Edwards.

http://truckalterations.com/html/accesslorado.html for the cover. It is lockable but you have to have a locking tailgate handle as well for it to work. I'm hoping to get an automatic tailgate lock at some point in time. The automatic locks that work with your keyless entry are about $100 and the good locking handles with a key are about $40-$50.
I have the Jack Rabbit on my SRT. I like it other than it rattles in the tracks at speeds of about 40+

I used to have the jack rabbit on a previous truck of mine, and it was fairly good, although like spicyjam said it doesnt seal very well along the tailgate. I also found that the vinyl faded very fast from a black to a light grey. If you were going the pace edwards route look at the full metal jacket roll up tonneau cover. It has all powder coated aluminum slats so it won't fade and won't chatter at travelling speeds, although it is quite a bit more expensive. Last time I looked it was upwards of $2k, but I'm north of the 49th.
There is one out there that looks just like the Pace Edwards one that along the back by the tailgate it has a lip on it that goes over the top of the tailgate.
That may help seal, but noise is a factor, but on my truck I do not hear anything but motor. As far as the locks on the cover, I never used mine. In my book they only keep honest people honest, I have a friend that he had his locked all the time and when he had it broke into they destroyed that cover getting in, the thing was a mess, and they got what they wanted regaurdless.

You lose about a foot and 1/2 of bed space, but I like the Jack Rabbit. Had two of 'em...one on a full size Chevy and the other currently on my Dodge. No problems, other than the not so good seal when fully closed at the tailgate. Never a lot of water in the bed at the back end, just a little. I just keep stuff pushed back in the back a bit. I bought both of them from JC Whitney with 15-20% off coupons and installed 'em myself. The best thing I found for the price. Would recommend.
