Were going to the UP in Michigan in January with the Diesel. Fuel Supplement?
We live in Indiana and were taking our snowmobiles to the UP in Michigan in January. Last year we went we took a gasser and it was -11 below on the way home. I got a new/used 03 CTD for the trip this year. I am concerned about fuel jelling up. Also the truck will be sitting in the hotel parking lot for 4-5 days in -11 temperatures. What should I do to prevent any troubles with starting it and driving it home? Should I fill up the tank when I get there and add a supplement to the fuel? Will this truck start without being plugged in -11 below?
I use Power Service in the White bottle this prevents the fuel from gelling-up, you should have no problem starting the truck in those temperatures. I have started mine @ -30 celsius, but it always helps to plug it in a couple of hours prior to starting if possible. Good luck and hope you have a good trip.
Make sure you add the anti-gel to the tank before you get there so it has time to work itself throughout all the fuel lines. Adding it to the tank when you get there may not give it time to get dispersed adequately. I'd run it the whole trip, starting when you leave home.
I've been going to MI (Wakefield/Burglund/Houghton) snowmobiling for the last 15 years 4 times per year and the last 7 I've used my 2001 5.9 with no ill effects. We've seen close to -30 below Fahrenheit and I've never added anti-gel to the fuel and I've yet to have an issue, not saying you won't. I've always pulled in to the hotel lot with 1/4 tank of fuel and only fueled on the way out we always stay for 5 days. Ask the hotel owner/manager were your staying if you can plug the truck in, just bring your own extension cord, every motel I've stayed at had no problem with my truck being plugged in.
I'm not saying you won't have any problems but my 5.9 has yet to have a problem in the past 7 years in the same region. It's only been within the last 4 years I've been plugging the truck in and if it's offered take them up on it, your truck will thank you.
