Default 1st gen cummins info please help

ok iv searched and searched and not found very much info on what im looking for so here it goes.
I found a 1st gen dodge cummins. Its a dually five speed 2wd and i need info and like lots of info.
I searched and found out some one said the engine is the exact same 12v as the 2gen cummins. If so then parts shouldnt be hard to come by as they should exchange between each other. Why does the early cummins 89-93 not make the power as 94-98.5. Just lower boost and hotter intake side or what. some one please explain as i might pick the truck up. Is it not the same five speed. Some mentioned in a thread about it being some weird named gearbox and theirs adapter kits to put newer model gearboxes in. Is the bell housing of different bolt pattarn or something, as i would love to have a 6 speed one day. any info would be helpfull for me and others looking into this kinda thing.

Well, . . . . . as I recall . . . .

The '89 to '91.5 CTD was non-intercooled and ran heads that use 9mm diameter injectors.

In the later half of '91, the CTD started using the intercooler and switched to a head that runs the 7mm injectors. Going from a larger injector bore to a smaller one was because of a pesky issue with the head cracking between the injector bore and an adjacent valve seat. The intercooler was added to help with emissions. (Note: Comparing stock/OEM injectors, the 9mm flow more fuel than the 7mm. One can purchase adapters that will allow one to run 7mm injectors in a 9mm head if you must).

As such, the heads are effectively the same from 91.5 on up to the introduction of the 24v (some say the '93 head is the best in terms of porting potential).

From '89 to '93, Dodge bounced back and forth from the 18cm to 21cm "Lag-Master" turbocharger exhaust housings. The '93 had the 18cm housing. Many enjoy much better engine response by switching to the relatively cheaply found 16cm housing

The stock power of the '89 to '93 came from the Bosch rotary VE injection pump. In '94 they went to the P pump hence the BIG power disparity. The 1st gen "VE" CTD can be converted to the P-pump by swapping the engine's front gear-drive housing, high pressure injection lines, etc.

Otherwise, the CTD long-block is virtually identical from '89 to the 24v. (Note: Dodge/Cummins dinked around with the piston ring placement and a few other minor things along the way).

Otherwise, I know diddly about the manual trans other than what I've read.

- It seems the manual (one of them) will last MUCH longer if one were to over-fill the lube oil by one quart.
- I recall seeing more than once that one of the nuts that holds a gear onto a shaft needs to be tightened and super-glued.

Might want to check with others there.

Good reading . .

Hope this helps.
