Default CTD in my future soon!

Hi guys,

This is my first post but have researched here for a long time. I currently own an 07 slt quad cab trx4, and although I like the truck, it's no CTD.

I've wanted one for a long time and now I'm in the position to hopefully buy one....if I can make up my mind on which to get.

I have my eye on an 06 megacab 5.9L with a 6 spd manual, but my local dealer wants to sell me a 6.7L quad cab slt with auto. Payments will be about $100 a month difference. It's not so much the money issue as an engine issue. I've read about the growing pains of the 6.7L and the reliability of the 5.9L so I would prefer the 5.9L but the price difference is so little, should I just pull the trigger on a new 6.7L? My luck is absolutely terrible so if there's trouble to be had, it'll find me so I am very skeptic.

It looks as though the 5.9L are holding their values, and the 6.7L are going for cheap.....is this due the the emissions troubles or dodge troubles in general. The dealer says there's a 10K rebate right out of the gate on a diesel truck!

What would you guys do? Are the 5.9L that much less trouble?

Thanks guys,

Welcome to DF... If you have your eye on a truck, do not let a sales guy steer you in another direction. They are paid to sell you as much as they can.

as for motor reliability... as you mentioned, some have had issues with the 6.7, but since I own a 5.9 I can not comment from experience. The 5.9 I have has proven to be a rock solid motor. Mild go fast goodies added...

edit: price difference is so little? $100 x 12 x # of years... it adds up.

After talking to the two dealers today and working out the final price, the new 6.7L will cost $8000 more at the end of payment but it is two years newer with no mileage and full warranty. The 06 has 116K on it and the powertrain warranty is done at 150K.

I'm going to the dealer after work to sign for the 08! It's a black quad cab 4x4 SLT. The only addition I would like is a Banks exhaust but not until the warranty is up. Can't wait to try her out.

Good luck with your purchase; no doubt you'll enjoy your new truck!

As for the exhaust, waiting until the warranty is expired is a good idea but you may want to rethink going with Banks products. If you want to delete the diesel particulate filter there are kits sold by H&S Performance and Bay Area Diesel Performance that will do the trick. Also, I suggest you do not add a tuner box to increase your performance until you get rid of the DPF, otherwise the extra soot created at the higher power levels will clog it. It happened to me when I added an Edge Juice w/ Attitude. I actually uninstalled my Edge several months ago and my DPF problems went away. In another 15 months my warranty will expire and then I plan to do the "DPF delete" mod and reinstall the Edge.

I don't think I'll ever add any high performance stuff other than a catback and remove dpf. I don't think I'll ever go the tuner route.

I remember reading that some guys add something to the fuel to increase mileage. Is this all it does or are there other benefits?

What are some of the break in procedures you guys use?

thanks,
