Default 2001 Dodge Ram 2500

Hello all, I've got some Q's about the dodge diesels, I am looking into buying one (I'm only 17 btw) how long do the diesels last? There is one with 111,000 miles that I'm looking at right now. Most all the miles are highway (not pulling it was used as a commuter vehicle) It is also owned my a woman. The first owner was a salesman and used it mainly on the highway as well and would load his goods in the bed.

Here are some of the opions.

-Automatic Transmission
-111,281 miles
-Patriot Blue
-2wd
-Quad Cab
-Tow Package
-Regular Bed
-Leather
-Heated Seats
-Single Disc CD
-AM/FM
-Tinted Windows
*Documentation of oil changes, etc.

I would use it as a commuter vehicle and to pull my tractors. I also hear they do well on mpg. At this time I drive a 90's chevy with a 350 in it, I can 15 in town, but would like to get a little better with a 2500 diesel (Like 18-20 at best) I'm also not a hard driver. My friend owns a dodge 3500 and she gets about 19-20 in town.

I'm unsure about buying a 2500 having 111000 miles with a auto tranny, how long do the autos last in the diesels?

If you have any advice on this, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
-Daniel

if the price is right, i say go for it. the tranny's are allways subject to fail, it was'nt the best part of the dodge forsure. the miles are no big deal, take care of em they will go forever. the lift pump on the block just before the fuel filter is about the only trouble i have ever had. 2wd and a lite foot, it should get pretty good mileage. a tranny shop told me that a shift kit would fix the shifting slug. but i have'nt tried that yet. good luck and enjoy. a couple of other things to be aware of... the VP44 injection pump requires a lot of lubrication from the fuel and has been a weak point of that motor. if available, use b-5 biodiesel or add 2 stroke oil to each tank. the other thing to mention is that there is a block that has been known to crack, it is stamped 53 towards the front of the motor, I dont recall which side it's on. Not all blocks crack and it is fixable. Just be aware of it.

the only other thing I can think of is the tranny fluid... smell it and look at it... make sure it is not burnt. as mentioned earlier, the AT's suck in the rams in stock form. they are ok for normal use but if you bump the power, upgrade the tranny as well to handle the added power.

good luck with the lookee today and let us know what happens...

Well I just got back from looking at it. The pump was replaced by the locale dodge dealership about 15000 miles ago, and the torque converter and tranny lines where replace about 25000 miles back also. The leather seat look great also. It has about 5 digs in it, but thats about it. I also got him down to 10,500. Dose that sound like good price?
