thought i'd re/cross-post this here, as nemesis_ss suggested in the 1st gen forum:
hi folks, looking for a little guidance. after selling my problematic 6.5l gmc diesel, am now looking for a good towing pickup with a cummins. i've driven a couple '96 2500s and a '98 12 valve (all with automatic transmissions), and will be seeing a '92 d250 extended-cab on friday or saturday. can anyone tell me the main things i should be looking for on the '92? similarities/differences i'll notice between that and the '96/'98 models?
the truck has 450,000 miles on it, but could be a steal at under $1800. i want to be sure to check it over thoroughly. it's the 2-wheel drive model (i wanted 4x4 for montana winters, but was told even the 2wd rams are still pretty powerful on rough terrain). got any tips on smart buying strategies with a high-mileage truck like this one?
thank you for any input you can provide!

hey cartalk2,
totally interested! i'm in california, but have an option of flying out to visit my family in eastern PA. the top end of my budget is somewhere around $3300 at the moment, though. i don't know what you're looking to get for the truck.
let me know, and thank you for the reply here.

Stick with a 4X4. While the 2X4's have the power, they don't have the traction to use it. That Cummins is heavy, and all the weight is up front.
200k+ isn't a problem for the motor, but the rest of the truck will be questionable. Every little wear item will be borderline. From such minor things as wiper transmission pivots to differentials, at those mileages you need to check it over very carefully.
Up around 400k, they are getting due for a valve job.
There are lots of these trucks around with high mileage, so I'm not trying to dissuade you, just keep your eyes open, and some extra cash for possible repairs.
Get service records if possible. Good maintenance helps a bunch.
