Another option is to swap in a Cummins 4BT. This is an inline 4 cylinder baby brother of the 5.9L.

ive read about that in some offroad rigs, like jeeps and such because its smaller.

It's stout little engine. I met a guy at a dyno day that swapped a 4bt into a 3500 GMC crew cab dually. He got it out of a bread truck and swapped it right into his big ole 1 ton truck. He claimed 30 mpg.
