Default cruise control questions

Hey everyone
I have a question the other day I was driving with my cruise on and the road got bumpy from potholes. The cruise shut itself off for a split second then gave itself throttle back up to 55mph. I'm sure it is nothing wrong but that is weird. I would imagine that is a pretty good safety item if you was to loose control the cruise control wouldn't make it worse. Is that what it is for?
If so is that included on gas models as well? Or just the diesel models?

Mine has never shut itself off like that. If it's for safety it must be a new feature not on the 07's
