"chipped" engines - good, bad, ugly???
I am looking to buy a 3500 with the 5.9. I have heard some different things about chips. Some people in their ads will say "never been chipped" while others will include different types of chips as part of the "desirable" features. What do you all think? If you were going shopping would you absolutely stay away from a chipped truck or would you consider some and not others? If some are Ok which ones are they? The 5.9 will have more than enough power for my needs so anything that might decrease its life will be a very negative for me.
Thanks much for your time and help.

Here is my two cents worth. I run a smarty programer on my 2005 Ram, I wanted the slight increase in fuel economy and throttle response. I drive it very conservatively as I am trying to get 20 yrs out of it.
My son on the other hand runs a smarty programer with 7k dollars invested in a transmission and he runs it hard. I think the key is why someone has it chipped and how hard they ran it racing etc. One of the key considerations is have they done all of the routine maintenance, I have all reciepts and spreadsheet of all of my maintenance, even oil analysis on lubes.

When you start adding chips, and other mods, that can shortnt the life of the engine,
all depends how it fis being driven , with those mods. i am at a point were any more mods for horse power i will need a trans up grade, any engine mods takes it toll on the trans. good luck finding a truck.

You do not want to buy anything that is for sale that has been chipped and you did not do it or was there for when it was "Chipped"!
