Wastegate/actuator failing?
I was just looking at his page how ironic still have it open to be exact. I don't have gauges in my truck also. but i don't want to loose the grab handle if you mount three pod you loose your handle so I am getting a monitor as long as it has fuel rail pressure included if not then i will get that with a one pod for a fuel rail pressure gauge. but everything is on hold till I get back to work.
Couple things;
NO blowoff valve on a our Cummins from the factory. The noise you're hearing is usually called "turbo bark" and is not healthy.
The wastegate operates on PRESSURE not vacuum. Boost pressure opens it, it is normally closed.
You can test the wastegate by applying compressed air into the line that operates it. Use a regulater, and start at 18-20psi. You should NOT be able to move it by hand.
If the actuator fails and the w/g doesn't open, you will get more boost, which could explain the boots blowing off, but generally you need more fuel to get more boost.

Correct Racer9 sorry i was thinking gas engine with the actuator hose connected to the intake.that would create Vacuum on a gasser. turbo diesel creates pressure in the intake. and it is normally closed till the boost pressure reaches its preset pressure then it opens to release pressure so you won't trash the internals.
I didnt see the part where he moved it by hand.
he shouldn't be able to move it?

The spring must be stiff enough to keep the w/g closed, up to the pressure where it is supposed to open. It is very difficult, if not impossible to push back against a 15-20psi spring.
I now I can't move mine, but maybe he's stronger than me.
The wastegate opens to bleed off exhaust gas pressure, to prevent the turbo from overspeeding, and exploding.
