Default programmer questions on early 3rd gen

ok so im a huge cummins fan and theres a chance i might be getting my aunts 3rd 2500 4x4. only thing is its an auto tranny i wish it had the six speed. ive heard dodge transmissions arent the greatest and im not sure on the year prolly 03 to 05 and im sure its fairly high on mileage. so if its an 04 with about 200,00 miles for example how bad of an idea is it to put a programmer on it. i really dont want to have to put a new tranny in.

sorry for not having the exact specs

'03 or '04 was when the went to the heavier duty 48RE trans. But with high mileage you still don't want to go crazy with power mods, unless you can afford a trans. Of course a lot will depend on how you drive.
