Default Looking at Diesels

Hey everyone, I've been the owner of a 2002 Ram 1500 for almost three years now and plan on making the move to a Cummins. I'm just not exactly sure as to what engine would be best. I am torn between the 5.9 and 6.7 but am leaning towards the 5.9. I was just wondering what the positives/negatives were for each engine type so I can gain a little knowledge about them and narrow my search down so I can start looking around at specific trucks. I appreciate any help!

Steve

well...the 5.9 is certainly a beast in it's own and honestly, i don't think anything can ever beat a good ole 5.9...however, the 6.7 is based on the same block as the 5.9 has more power but worse fuel mileage...the earlier 6.7s had problems with DPF clogging up and whatnot, but pretty sure Cummins got that figured out with the prototype exhaust system they were working on when I worked for chrysler in 07-08...there more and more aftermarket stuff coming available for the 6.7 everyday, but i really think if I had to chose...i would take a 06 or early 07 5.9....just my 2 cents worth

but then again...i sold my 05 Hemi 1500 to get a 99 CTD so what do I know lol

lol, I appreciate your input, I am in fact looking at the 06-07 models. I'm really just seeing what's out there at this point and I'm waiting for one of those deals to show up when you just know it's "the one" LOL. Time will tell though. Thanks again.

I know these engines can go for a LONG time. But what is a good estimate that these engines can make it to mileage wise?

well...there's a guy here in town, who was actually feated in Diesel Power back in June or July 2009 that has a 99/00 CTD with 1 Million miles...said he had gone through like 2 injection pumps, 3 lift pumps, and so on....so really I mean it possible to get that kind of life out of them, but then again this guy mainly just used his for hauling stuff on the road....but i dont see anything wrong with gettin 4-500,000 out of em...hell, i bought mine with 159K on it with no worries....my buddy has a 2000 with 280K, and another one has 310K on his

Wow, I thought they could easily go for 200k-250k...but no where near the amount you said. That's insane.
