Default Transmission Shifting Problem

Hi,

I have a 2003 Dodge 2500 w/Cummins Diesel engine. My transmission likes to "clunk" when it downshifts into 2nd gear. It doesn't do it constantly but usually when I'm towing.

Any help would be appreciated.

John

does it only do it when downshifting into 2nd gear from 3rd or does it happen when downshifting to 3rd when in OD etc...

If it's only doing between 2nd and 3rd, there are 2 possibilities.

1 - the governor solenoid and / or pressure sensor are going bad (hopefully)
2 - the snap ring on one of the drums has broken (hopefully not)

Either way, you need to remove the trans pan.

If you find pieces of snap ring (like the '05 that I have in the shop right now) you'll be tearing the trans apart.

If not, then it's likely the solenoid and sensor, which is right above the filter and easy to swap.

It only does it when downshifting, and only from 3rd to 2nd, at about 15-18mph. Fluid was replaced. No better. Thanks for your help.

If it is the solenoid and sensor, any idea what I should expect to pay? Am I better off using my Dodge dealer or a transmission guy?

If it's the solenoid and sensor, I can get those to you.

We keep 2 sets on hand, it's one of the more common problems on these transmission.

Coal Train - Are you saying this is something I can install myself?
