Default 01 smoking and gutless

well to start off i got a 2001 2500 24 valve ctd with the 150gph fass lift pump on it and a edge juice with attitude. truck only has 50000 miles on it. a while back was leaving the farm and truck wouldnt rev up, so let off the pedal and floored it a few times and it started reving up and smoking blue terrible bad. and was making a popping noise. truck is straight piped. cleared itself up within a few minutes, and all was fine. when i got back to town i changed fuel filters thinking it must of got some dirty fuel in it. it also threw the p0216 code (injection pump out of time or recieved less than 5psi of fuel.) just blamed that on the bad fuel and erased it it hasnt come back

now a couple days ago goin down the road had the pedal at 50 percent throttle accelerating and all of a sudden dropped down to 1300 rpm and no matter where the pedal was it wouldnt change rpm. so once again i let off and hit it a couple of times and all went back to normal. and now im thinking the two events have something in common.

any ideas what i might be able to test to see whats going on here? any advice would be awesome!

thanks in advance,

curtis.

Reset your APPS? Not 100% sure, but I think that can cause symptoms like your having.

That P0216 is usually the death code for the VP44. Did you recently change lift pumps? Was the old one bad?

i changed the lift pump a year ago, just as a precautionary measure. i had heard lots about how the stock lift pumps were not very good so i just put the fass in it right when i bought it.

im not too sure how to go about resetting the APPS, can a person do it say with a solus pro from snap on or any other scanner or diagnostic stuff he carries?

Default Same problem

I have great acceleration but I can't maintaine speed below 1500 rpm.
This is an intermitten problem on my truck.
I can pull 6 & 7 percent grades with a 10 foot camper and a 19 foot boat in top gear so long as I keep the rpm above 1500.
With that kind of pulling power how could it be the vp44 pump?

Any comments are appreciated.

Allan

maby a pluged fuel filter, but probably a bad lift pump, and more than likely the vp44 is toast if you have been driving it,

He's got a FASS, that shouldn't be a problem. I'd wager the VP44 is shot.

Smile Smokin No More

Had the same problem, did all the same cures, no change.
Replaced the VP44 $1010.00 and 2.5 hrs (http://www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/bosch/vp44-injector-pump.htm?gclid=CI7k9vvdoKQCFRpZiAodUA7z3g) problem gone.
Also replaced apps / tps $169.00 and .5 hrs. (http://www.genosgarage.com/)
No change.

Ok I had the best diesel mechanic in the country, Ken Lund, Volvo USA service rep. helping. He is my son in law.
When I told him I had the 216 code he told me to not fool around just replace the VP-44

Hope this helps
