Transmission problem
Hi,
I have a 1996 Dodge cummins diesel with an automatic transmission and when the transmission downshifts from 3rd to 2nd it makes a clunk sound. If somebody has any idea what the problem could be that would be great.
Thanks

do you have the hyrdaulic version or electrictronnically controlled version?
im guessing you have the 47RE
and have you verified the correct transmission fluid level?
low fluid level can cause hard engagements.
-the kickdown valve is what performs your 3-2 downshift
-The limit valve determines maximum speed at which a 3-2 part throttle kickdown can be made. On transmissions without a limit valve, maximum speed for a 3-2 kickdown is at detent position.
-The 2-3 shuttle valve has two functions. First is fast front band release and smooth engagement during lift-foot 2-3 upshifts. The second is to regulate front clutch and band application during 3-2 downshifts.

Hey brettj2408, I have the 47re auto. transmission. My fluid level is good and its not burnt. I dont have much knowledge on transmissions but do you think it could be a soloind or sensor or does it sound more serious like a tranny overhaul?
