‘06 vs. ‘07/08 Diesel
When I was looking, the DPF/EGR was a major concern and almost convinced me to get a 5.9 - however the automatics behind the 5.9 are WEAK compared to the 6.7's. If you're getting a manual, the 5.9 is going to be a better deal - no DPF/EGR and a great tranny, plus more aftermarket support (currently).
However, the guys at DK Diesel convinced me.
Sure, it's not cheap, but it works.
1) S&B Intake
2) AFE exhaust (no DPF/CAT/etc)
3) EGR delete
4) Fuel rail shim
5) Black Maxx tuner
6) Air Dog lift pump/filter
That's what I did to my 6.7 immediately after getting it.
Cruising on the freeway I got 23 mpg over a 150 mile trip. That's with an automatic, doing roughly 65-70.
On a 4800 mile cross-country road trip, towing my 24' enclosed trailer filled with a 3-bedroom house's worth of furniture and belongings, weighing in at over 14k pounds, I averaged about 13 mpg.
That includes towing the trailer up the 10% grade to Mt. Rushmore - that was the ONLY hill that gave me any grief - and not because of a lack of power, it was just too slow (25-35 mph zones) and my tranny was getting a bit warm.
The built-in exhaust brake was a GODSEND on that trip. There were very few hills that I actually had to hit the brakes coming down.

Well.... I have to say I may just go with a '08 or '10 F250. The interiors are just superior to the Dodge ('06 - '09) and I've been spoiled with my '09 and I just don't think I can go back. I just can't see spending on a new '10 Dodge when the '10 F-250s are currently 15,000 off and that has also lowered the used prices on the '08s. Plus, power folding and extending tow mirrors are pretty cool.
