Default 2004 cummins wont start

hello all, new to the forum and trying to get some help!
the problem is i was driving home and truck was running fine on highway, when out of nowhere engine shuts down, never lost electrical, engine just died, coasted to shoulder and tried to restart, truck ran for about 5 seconds and died again, tried to start a second time and absolutely nothing!checked all fuses and everything is fine. dont really know where to go from here.dont know alot about deisels and dont want to take to dealer so they can play "guess the part and try".not enough money for that. is there some simple testing i can do to try to diagnose the problem? any info would be a huge help !

It might be your lift pump... Mine just went out last week and I got the new one installed last night.

There is a key trick to get codes!!

With the truck off and the key in the off position, turn it to on (but not start), off, on, off, on and then leave it at on. In the odometer section, you should see a P code come up, it might cycle through a couple, so have a pen/paper handy.

WHOAAAA.......don't spray ether in these engines. The grid heater has been know to make things go bang. I believe the early 04's had the pump right behind the fuel filter and the late 04's had the pump relocated to the tank. DO THE KEY TRICK MENTIONED ABOVE AND GET THE CODES.
