Replacing Stock Turbo, Best Choices For Aftermarket Turbo?
I have an 05 dodge 2500 with the cummins. I have used the edge programmer since it had a few thousand miles on it, my truck only has 19,000 miles on it. The torque converter has already been replaced on my truck by the factory, now my turbo seems to be going out. I have always used my edge on either 1 or 2 setting and baby my truck. Once in a while i tow my boat or my toy hauler to Glamis, but nothing too heavy for too long. The dealership says they can't see anything wrong with my truck, but i know it has a power loss. With my edge programmer hooked up, my truck only can reach the mid 20's psi for boost, when it used to get up in the 30's when i'm towing something. If i'm pulling a 30 foot boat, i can't get over 55mph going up a medium hill, and that's without the programmer hooked up. I have checked to try and find a leak somewhere and can't find it. The dealer says there's nothing wrong with the truck, but my truck has thrown a Low Boost code several times, and then disappears after a few days, and also has kicked itself into limp mode a couple times. Ofcourse it did neither of these things when the dealership had it for a week so they couldn't find the problem. My EGT's are also higher than they ever were, even without a load going up a medium hill, they hit 1300 degrees, and they never did that unless i was really pushing my truck with a load on it. I talked to a diesel mechanic about my problem, and he said it's my turbo, that the stock ones are fine for the mid 20's of boost but if they get up in the 30's they won't last. It also seems like i have a light rattling coming from the engine compartment when i'm driving and my foot is pressed on the pedal in a certain way, not if i have it WOT, but barely pressed. I don't know, i love my truck, but for the low miles i've had alot of problems. So if i have to replace my turbo, I want to get something that is going to last, and can give me the higher boost without getting damaged. So i'm looking for some advice on some upgrades, the only things i've done is the edge programmer and k&n intake. It's lifted with 37" tires on it, straight piped. I'm thinking i may need bigger injectors also, intake manifold maybe? I won't change the turbo till the new one takes a crap again and then i'll get a better one. So please gimme some input on this and what you guys think my best options are. I would like something that spools up faster, my stock one seemed to take forever, but quicker with the programmer on. thanks for your time reading this!!
it sounds like you wastegate is stuck open, slow spool, high egt's, and low pressures are all signs of an open wastegate, or a boost leak, i know you said you checked all the boost connections but did you pyhsically grab each one? i have seen a lot of times the clamp still in position but the tube slid off and still appears to be connected, so if you havent, give each connection a good pull by hand and inspection of the clamp and connection, if everything seems ok then look into the wastegate, a lot cheaper than an entire turbo, and thoes stock turbos are normally very fast spooling, anything under 35psi will be just fine for the stock turbo

Thanks for your reply. I will check the connections again this evening when i get home. When this first happened, i checked all my connections and i had a couple loose ones on my air intake, so i thought maybe it sucked up some dirt into the turbo and might have ruined something also. But all the connections to the intercooler and around seemed tight. I found out about some of the intercoolers have plastic sides on some years up to 05, but mine are metal so i got lucky there because i know they were known to crack.
Also, I kind of remember there may have been some problems with an AC line rubbing through the intercooler boot on the passenger side. This might not be an issue on the '05, I can't remember what years had some problems with this, just another place to check.
