New from CA-SMOG issues
Hey my husband has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel truck. Our DMV notice said that he has to smog it. We bought it with straight exhaust with no cat or muffler. We had to install a muffler after a decible ticket, now we need to find out if the "stock" truck has any sensors, we took it to a smog place and they pointed out that there were 2 readings missing, is there any sensors in the exhaust that we are missing? There are some wires by the manifold but they dont go anywhere, any help would be great.
Questions
1. Were there sensors on a stock 2005 Dodge Ram diesel 4x4?
2. Where should the sensors be located?
Thanks for the help
Sandy

there are no sensors in the exhaust, the loose wires are more than likely an option that isnt on the truck, for the 2 missing ???? have the batteries been disconnected lately, if so, it just needs to be driven a few times to bring all of the computers on line, but i would almost bet that the dummie that hooked it up to the machine was looking for gas engine readings....
I just had my diesel truck smogged for the first time here in California.
I have the 6.7L which has an EGR, a cat, and a DPF, with sensors in the DPF. In '05 you have no DPF, but I don't know if you are supposed to have an EGR, a cat, or sensors.
FWIW.... The guy at my smog shop said that CA DMV doesn't have the software to update the older test computers for the diesel check. He said he's just supposed to do the visual and the smoke check, without hooking the truck up to the computer. He said DMV told him they should have all the stations "online" with the test computers by mid year 2011.
It's possible as suggested, your tester is not sure how to run the diesel test and may have hooked up your diesel to a non-compatible test computer. That would give you inaccurate test results.
If your tester had an updated computer, just by entering the VIN, the computer would know what to check/look for and did the test correctly.
Since the prior owner went to a straight pipe, without asking him, who knows what else has been removed or modified. You should probably get it checked out by someone who knows what smog stuff is supposed on your truck and go from there.
Good Luck

I had my mildly modded 07 smogged and getting ready to smog my modded 03 so here's what I've learned thus far from my diesel mechanic and my smog guy and my local dealership. So my 07 was an original CA truck that came with Catalytic converter and you can look on the sticker on the drivers side of the valve cover, in the box to the right of where it says "catalyist" there will be a numer to prove it came with a CAT from the factory. My 03 has a blank box next to where it says 'catalyist' which means it was not an original CA truck and it didn't come from the factory with a CAT...(thats why I went to TX to pick it up because I didn't want a truck with a CAT). So the moral of that story means if it came from the factory with a CAT then there will be a CAT numer on the Valve cover. Also, there shouldn't be any sensors in the exhaust until 07.5 when the 6.7's came out. Next, the muffler is merely for noise pollution and is not considered in the visual inspection...but you still can be cited for noise. (trust me, my 03 is straight piped turbo back and 4" and is FREAKING LOUD!!!)
Next, before I had to get my 07 smogged there was a recall to have the ECM reflashed because these diesels were never meant to be smogged so smog machines at the smog shop couldn't "talk" to the computer in the truck. So that could be one reason why it might have read and failed. Also any 'check engine' light is automatic fail.
Next if you have any programmers, chips, or modules loaded into your truck it won't pass smog. You have to load the stock program back onto your ECM if you have a programmer. If you have a chip or module you have to unplug it and plug it back to stock. I left my boostfooler plugged in on the 07 because the guy at the dealership said it wouldn't matter if it was plugged in or not and he was right, it passed smog no problem with it (boost fooler).
I had the smog shop, diesel mechanic, and my dealership look at my 03 which has a quadzilla cold air intake, a CFM+ boost elbow, and 4" turboback exhaust and they all said it was good to go as far as smog goes as long as it doesn't have any aftermarket program loaded onto the computer.
Hope this helps. If I can help answer anymore I'd sure like to try.
