im just worried about the rest of the truck i know the motor will b fine but my 01 that i have has a little over 181000 miles on it now and it needs alot of work if i were to fix everything that was wrong with it but the truck isnt worth it so thats whats making me worried about a truck with that many miles on it

I wouldn't ever pay that much for a truck that old, especially a vp44 truck

2003+ have cp3s, and are also common rail.

I drive a 2001 myself, its more of a problem with the lift pump than the injector pump. If you install an aftermarket lift pump and use additives the vp44 can last a while. I just wouldn't pay 15K for one, you can get a much better 3rd gen common rail truck for around that price.

Another thing to watch out for is people spray painting the frame to make it look rust free. I've seen this before, the guy also claimed the truck had never been offroad, however he missed some spots on the spray job and there was mud.

you should do some research on cummins so you know the quirks and problems with the certain year models and engines. they all have problems.

Its just strongly recommended that you use additives, especially with a vp44. Its been know to fail from lack of lubrication. And Ultra-low sulfur diesel provides hardly any.
