Default Code Scanner ?

Just wondering, I have not been unable to diagnose my truck's problem so thinking an inexpensive Scanner could help?
I've been told many times in the past don't bother that I need an expensive one and buy the CD's for my specific truck, etc, etc.
However, an ex-mechanic down the road told me that it might work depending on the brand?

Does this make any sense?

CAN I purchase an inexpensive scanner from Harbor Freight and will it read ALL the codes even the Cummins codes?
Thats what I heard is it may only read the Dodge/Chrysler codes (P codes) and not the cummins.

thanks

the little cheapo scanner i have works on everything, you should be fine, on a side note, most chips/programmers have a code reader/clearer built in if you want to go that route

you can retreive the codes by switching the key on, off, on, off, on and then looking at the odometer. it will say "done" if there are no codes and it will start listing codes like "P101" etc. if there are codes. then you can look up what they mean. No need to spend the money on a reader. I have one and never use it because it's just easier to use the truck.

Thanks Justin,
Got all the codes I needed and didNOT want to see. lol
IP is done as well as some sort of problem with the APPS.

The 3-Key stroke deal doesn't bring out all the codes and sometimes won't bring out any codes. The $59 scanner brought them all out 0122,0121 and the deadly ones : ,0216 0251 and 0252
This freeg'n IP has only 17K on it. I don't' get it.
